Stories From The Toyshelf

Every toy in my collection has a story, how I came upon it, why I bought it or even just some random or obscure bit of info about it. Admittedly not all of them are amazing, funny or interesting...but I think some of them are, and I'd like to tell you about them...one toy at a time.

  The Wounded Warrior

  Oct 3, 202629 min

The Story of the most misunderstood warrior in Eternia.MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE FISTO might be remembered today for a name that makes corporate executives nervous and fans giggle like twelve-year-olds, but the deeper I dug into his history, the more I realized there was far more to him than a giant metal hand and an unfortunate punchline. From vintage mini-comics and Filmation to the 200X reboot, toy collecting controversies, family tragedy, redemption arcs, and one of the biggest unanswered mysteries in MOTU lore, I'm taking a look at the surprisingly rich story behind one of Eternia's most iconic warriors. Let's talk about the man behind the fist.

  Three Eyes Blind

  Oct 2, 202632 min

The story of a man who could see everything — except what was being done to him.Masters of the Universe Tri-Klops started as a toy gimmick but ended up as one of the most unexpectedly tragic characters in all of Eternia. From vintage action figures and mini-comics to Filmation, the 2002 reboot, Netflix, DC Comics, and beyond, I explore how a rotating visor turned into a story about loyalty, betrayal, technology, control, and one very unfortunate habit of serving the absolute worst people imaginable. Also: exploding visors, cult leader hats, overzealous glue factories, and why giving a sniper rifle to a guy with Distavision might actually make perfect sense.

Pretty Fly For A Fish Guy

  Oct 1, 202632 min

The Story of Masters of the Universe's Most Tragic King.I'm digging into the complete history of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE MER-MAN — from a prototype Mattel almost threw in the trash, to becoming one of Skeletor's most feared lieutenants, to losing absolutely everything, over and over again, across five decades of toys, comics, and cartoons. I'll get into his wildly different faces, his equally wild personalities, the kingdom he can't seem to hold onto (and why it's always somehow his own fault), and yes — an entirely unreasonable rundown of every single action figure ever made of the guy. Grab your corncob sword and let's dive in.

  The Quest For Greatness

  Sep 30, 202629 min

The Story of how one six-changing Decepticon became something far more complicated.I take a look at the origins, evolution and many different lives of Sixshot, from Takara's ambitious attempt to push the Triple Changer concept to the limit, to his brief Western cartoon appearance, his much bigger role in Japan, and the surprising path his character eventually took. Along the way, I'll dig into the toys, comics, cartoons, Greatshot connection and some of the stranger twists that helped turn Sixshot from a crazy six-mode gimmick into one of the more fascinating characters in Transformers. Because apparently six modes weren't enough. There had to be a seventh.

  Flying Question Mark

  Sep 25, 202637 min

The Story of one of the strangest, most confusing, and downright fascinating characters to ever take flight from the world of Eternia. When I unboxed the Masters of the Universe Stratos as a six-year-old kid back in the '80s, I was completely stumped—was I looking at an airborne hero, a flying monkey, or Skeletor’s next henchman? From Mark Taylor's early sketches and Mattel’s cost-cutting factory hacks to Filmation’s wild family reboots, the 200X glow-up, and decades of collectible plastic, here is my deep dive into how a walking contradiction became one of He-Man's most trusted allies.
