A LOT OF BS IN LA! Plus Utah Baseball, Nets & Anaheim Angels News
This is a solo Stadium BS rant — and I'm pissed. First up: Dodgers owner Mark Walter. Walter's financial empire has reportedly come under scrutiny from federal prosecutors and securities regulators over billions of dollars in undisclosed loans involving his companies. So what exactly is going on? Then we head across Los Angeles to the Clippers. For months, the questions surrounding Steve Ballmer, Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers' salary-cap situation continued to grow. Now we have an answer. The NBA ruled that the Clippers violated salary-cap circumvention rules involving off-court income opportunities connected to Kawhi Leonard. The punishment was massive: • Steve Ballmer suspended from NBA and team activities for one year • Clippers fined $30 million • Five future first-round draft picks forfeited • Clippers executives suspended • Kawhi Leonard fined $700,000 The NBA's investigation found that the Clippers helped facilitate endorsement opportunities involving companies doing business with the team. So was this simply an aggressive owner trying to keep his superstar and uncle happy? Then we're getting out of Los Angeles and talking baseball in Utah. Salt Lake City and Big League Utah continue to position themselves as one of the strongest candidates for MLB expansion. The proposed Power District ballpark is taking shape, the Miller organization continues preparing for a potential MLB team, and the vision is much bigger than simply building a baseball stadium. The goal remains to be ready for Major League Baseball by 2030. But there's a major obstacle: MLB's collective bargaining situation has to be resolved before expansion can really move forward. Could Utah finally become an MLB city? And what would an MLB stadium and surrounding development actually mean for Salt Lake City? Then we're talking Brooklyn Nets. The Nets are entering their 60th season, and they are paying homage to a rebranding that never happened? And finally… THE ANAHEIM ANGELS. This story just got VERY interesting. Arte Moreno's 23-year run as Angels owner is coming to an end after Stan Kroenke reached an agreement to purchase the team. Yes — THAT Stan Kroenke. The owner of the Los Angeles Rams, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids and Arsenal. The reported $4 billion purchase would give Kroenke another major professional sports franchise and could completely change the future of the Angels.
