John 12:27-36
John 12:27-36 - Daily Devotion - 22 August 2026 St Barnabas Anglican Church Fairfield & Bossley Park 27 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? No, it is for this purpose that I have come to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd standing there heard it and said that it had thundered. Others said that an angel had spoken to Him. 30 In response, Jesus said, “This voice was not for My benefit, but yours. 31 Now judgment is upon this world; now the prince of this world will be cast out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself.” 33 He said this to indicate the kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd replied, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever. So how can you say that the Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man?” 35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer, the Light will be among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of light.” After Jesus had spoken these things, He went away and was hidden from them. REFLECTIONS Written by Matt Radloff Why did Jesus come into the world? Why did he enter the world that he made? Why face rejection, humiliation and death? Jesus tells us that this is the very reason that he came. He came to die. But not a pointless, meaningless death. Jesus came to die a death that would be the most significant death in the history of the world. He knew that this was the reason for him to come, and he knew what it would accomplish. It would bring glory to his Father's name. Even while Jesus' soul was troubled, fearful of what stood before him, he called for his Father to glorify his name. Jesus knew that his death on the cross would bring glory to God. And that's exactly what it did. Jesus was lifted up, nailed to the cross in pain and suffering. And from there, he shone as light for all people, radiating God's glory. He gathered us to himself, people from all tribes and nations. He brought us to see the Father's love for us, so that we might give glory to the Father. Jesus shows us how important the Father's glory is to him. And I think this passage challenges us to seek the Father's glory as well. We don't do that by making ourselves look good. Instead, we give glory to the Father by listening to him. Jesus listened to his Father and obeyed him to the cross; he glorified his Father's name. And so, for us, we also bring glory to God when we listen to and obey him. As God calls us to step out in faith each and every day, we bring him glory when we listen to his voice. Most of all, we glorify God when we obey his word by coming to Jesus.
