The Death of a Patriarch
In Genesis 23 and 24, Abraham faces the death of his wife Sarah and the responsibility of securing a future for his son Isaac. Rather than retreating into grief or simply coasting through his final years, Abraham acts with intentional faith. He purchases a burial plot, the first piece of the promised land his family legally owns, and sends his servant on a mission to find Isaac a wife. Both actions reflect a man who believes God's promises extend far beyond His own lifetime. The sermon draws out three core truths from these chapters. First, faith invests in a future it may never personally see, like planting trees whose shade others will enjoy. Second, faith prepares the next generation to carry the promise forward, whether through parenting, mentoring, or discipleship. Third, after doing the faithful work of preparation, we must trust God with outcomes we cannot control. The story closes with Isaac and Rebecca beginning their life together, a picture of grief giving way to hope and one generation passing the baton to the next.
