  “B” is for Burnettown (Aiken County; 2020 population 3,104). Burnettown is located in the Horse Creek Valley of Aiken County. In 1901 Daniel Burnette obtained land, sold a few lots, homes were built, and the property became known as “Mr. Burnette's land.” When an interurban trolley began operation in 1902 people realized there was no name for this land between the mill villages of Langley and Bath. Passengers boarding or departing the trolley at this point decided to call the site Burnette Town. After the demise of the trolley line, workers need taxis to get to work, but only an incorporated town could license taxis. In 1941 Burnette Town opted to incorporate. The 2000 census reported that Burnettown was the fastest growing town in South Carolina, with a population that grew between 1990 and 2000 by 452%.

  “S” is for state flag. South Carolina's blue Flag with its white crescent and palmetto tree is simple in design but profoundly symbolic of a long history. Born for practicality, South Carolina's first state flag was designed by Colonel William Moultrie. During the Revolutionary War, he produced a blue flag with a white crescent un the upper corner (like the crescent on his troops’ hats). In December 1860 when South Carolina seceded from the union, an official state flag--blue with a white palmetto tree and a white crescent was adopted. In 1910 the General Assembly provided for the display of the state flag on public buildings.   “S” is for State Farmers Market

  “S” is for State Farmers Market. The State Farmers Market is a three-site system of state-sponsored facilities operated by the South Carolina State Department of Agriculture. Markets are located in Columbia, Greenville and the Pee Dee and provide leased spaces to wholesale and retail vendors. Until 1951, the Columbia Farmers Market was located on Assembly Street and then moved to a fifty-one acre site on Bluff Road. In 2010, it was relocated to site on the Charleston Highway in Lexington County. Until 1979 the Greenville Market was under the direction of Greenville County when the State Department of Agriculture assumed ownership. In 1983 the Pee Dee Market moved from downtown Florence to a site on U.S. Highway 52 between Florence and Darlington. All three State Farmers Markets offer South Carolina fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other commodities.

  “S” is for State Fair

  “S” is for State Fair. The South Carolina State Fair, formerly the State Agricultural and Mechanical Society of South Carolina was established in 1869. The society held its first fair on its fairgrounds on Elmwood Avenue. In 1903 the society purchased a one-hundred acre tract south of Columbia and held its first fair there in 1904. Until 1959 the State Fair was linked with the “Big Thursday” football classic between the University of South Carolina and Clemson University. Although best known for its annual eleven-day autumn carnival with amusement rides, exhibits, live entertainment, juried competitions, and food, the modern State Fair operates year-round. Trade shows, conventions, exhibitions, and special events are held on the fairgrounds and its six permanent buildings. The State Fair funds a scholarship program and makes contributions to nonprofit and charitable organizations throughout the state.

  “S” is for State , the. The State newspaper was born in 1891 of a bitter political struggle between South Carolina’s conservative political establishment and the agrarianism of Governor Benjamin “Pitchfork” Tillman. The newspaper later morphed into a champion of progressive causes and by 1910 was the largest newspaper in South Carolina. By the 1960s the State was basically conservative and began endorsing Republican Party candidates and causes. The newspaper was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for its reporting in 1989 on Hurricane Hugo. In 1987 its daily circulation peaked at 119,194. The newspaper and it affiliated radio and television enterprises were purchased by Knight Ridder in 1986. Twenty years later Knight Ridder was purchased by McClatchy. In 2024 the State began publishing a print edition only on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday with delivery by U.S. Mail.
