Lucas and Luna take a walking tour of American small business, stopping at a bakery in Portland that survived a rent hike by forming a worker cooperative, a bookstore in rural Mississippi that became a community anchor, and a hardware store in Ohio that outlasted three big-box competitors by leaning into hyperlocal service. Each episode starts with a single Main Street business — its founding story, its numbers (revenue, foot traffic, employee count), and one specific challenge it faced. Lucas brings the data: SBA loan records, county-level economic indicators, Census Bureau retail trade reports. Luna asks the human question: what did the owner actually decide to do, and how did it feel? Together, they trace how that decision ripples through the local supply chain, the landlord-tenant relationship, and the town’s tax base. This is not a how-to guide. It’s a forensic look at the economics of place — why some small businesses become institutions while others vanish. The listener who runs

How Local Hardware Stores Beat Big Box Retail With Repair Culture
Sep 11, 20268 minS4
While big box retailers struggle with shrinking margins and generic inventory, a specific local hardware store in Portland has turned repair services into its highest-margin revenue stream. We explore how this independent shop transformed from a simple parts dispenser into a community hub by charging for expertise rather than just products. The owner tracks time spent on repairs against sales volume, revealing that fix-it services drive higher customer loyalty and foot traffic than discount pricing ever could. Lucas and Luna break down the operational mechanics of this shift, examining why customers are willing to pay labor fees for ten-year-old appliances and what it means for the future of Main Street commerce in September twenty twenty-six. #SmallBusinessStrategy #LocalCommerce #RepairEconomy #HardwareStoreSuccess #CustomerLoyalty #MainStreetRevival #ServiceOverProduct #PortlandBusiness #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #RetailInnovation #CircularEconomy #LaborValue #IndependentRetail #CommunityHub #SustainableShopping #FixItCulture #LucasAndLuna Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How Independent Bookstores Survived the Amazon Shock
Sep 10, 20269 minS4
This episode explores the specific operational pivot that allowed independent bookstores to not just survive, but thrive against digital giants like Amazon. We focus on the 'community hub' model, where shops transformed from mere retail outlets into cultural centers offering curated experiences, local author events, and specialized inventory data that big-box retailers cannot replicate. Lucas and Luna break down how small business owners are using foot traffic and personalized service to build recurring revenue streams, turning casual browsers into loyal subscribers. We also examine the financial mechanics behind this shift, including how higher-margin services offset lower margins on physical goods, and why the 'experience economy' is now a critical component of main street commerce. #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #SmallBusinessSuccess #IndependentRetail #CommunityCommerce #BookstoreStrategy #MainStreetEconomy #CustomerExperience #LocalBusinessGrowth #RecurringRevenue #FootTrafficConversion #CuratedInventory #LocalAuthors #RetailPivot #ConsumerBehavior #ServiceBasedRevenue #DigitalDisruption #ShopLocal Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
