Ecclesiastes Overview - Stephen Muldrow
Ecclesiastes is not ultimately a book about meaninglessness or hopelessness, but about putting the cares and pursuits of this world into their proper perspective. The Teacher honestly wrestles with the frustrations, uncertainties, and fleeting nature of life “under the sun,” yet he repeatedly points us beyond what is temporary to the God who is sovereign over it all. Rather than teaching us to despise this life, Ecclesiastes helps us receive its ordinary joys as gifts from a good God. There is beauty in work, relationships, food, pleasure, and the simple moments of life. But those gifts were never meant to bear the weight of being ultimate. When we trust that God is in control, we can let go of our desperate attempts to control life ourselves and learn to enjoy what He has given us. Ecclesiastes calls us to live faithfully, gratefully, and joyfully in the present while resting in the God who holds both our lives and eternity in His hands.
