What Happens After a Death: Funeral Costs and the Power of Pre-Planning
Apr 14, 202628 min
What really happens after someone dies, and why does it feel so overwhelming for families? In this Senior Matters Podcast episode, Mark E. Wight, host and estate planning attorney and Brian Ownings. Funeral Director of Summers Funeral Home, pull back the curtain on the funeral industry to explain the professional standards, legal requirements, and operational processes that begin immediately after a death. From hospital and hospice coordination to documentation, cremation procedures, and family decision-making, funeral professionals play a critical role during one of life's most vulnerable moments. We also explore how modern culture's avoidance of death has changed the way families grieve, why funeral costs can escalate so quickly, and how a lack of planning often leads to conflict and stress for loved ones. Most importantly, this conversation highlights why funeral pre-planning is not about death, but about protecting family members from emotional and financial burden. This episode is especially relevant for Idaho families who want clarity, peace of mind, and a better understanding of how end-of-life planning fits into a complete estate plan.

Tax Planning as a Long-Term Strategy: Protecting Assets and Legacy
Mar 10, 202630 min
Tax season does not start in February, and it certainly does not end on April 15. In this episode of the Senior Matters Podcast, Mark Wight sits down with Idaho CPA Dean Hahn to explain why proactive tax planning is one of the most overlooked pillars of long-term estate and financial planning. Dean breaks down the reality of today's tax landscape, including why most tax decisions for a given year are already locked in by mid-January, how IRS rules and court rulings create complexity that cannot be solved with software alone, and why early planning in April or May can uncover opportunities many families miss entirely. The conversation also tackles common audit fears, explaining why most IRS notices are routine, how cooperation protects taxpayers, and why education and preparation dramatically reduce anxiety. Seniors, retirees, and those planning their legacy will learn how working collaboratively with tax professionals supports asset protection, compliance, and peace of mind for the long term.

Feb 24, 202645 min

Wight breaks down how recent Idaho tax cuts and budget decisions are directly impacting seniors, healthcare access, Medicaid services, and long-term care across the state. Senator Wintrow explains how over $453 million in tax cuts have reduced funding for essential public services including healthcare, mental health programs, public transit, and state staffing at a time when Idaho's aging population is growing faster than ever. You'll also hear about: · Why Medicaid funding cuts threaten assisted living, memory care, and long-term care access in Idaho · How healthcare shortages are creating maternity deserts and limiting care for aging populations · The long-term risks of election-driven budgeting and short-sighted fiscal policy · How citizen engagement,̄ from contacting legislators to voting can influence senior services This episode is essential listening for Idaho seniors, caregivers, retirees, and families concerned about healthcare access, long-term care costs, and the future of public services in our state.
