Skills and Mindset for Future-Proofing Results, Ep #526
Kristie Jones, sales leader and author of Selling Your Way In, joins me to explore the recent changes in sales leadership methodology. With over 20 years of experience transforming B2B SaaS startups, Kristie shares her perspective on the distinctions between leadership and management, the strategic role of AI in coaching, and the leadership skills modern organizations must develop to thrive. We discuss practical strategies for building high-performance sales teams, and Kristie gives her actionable advice for hiring, coaching, and leading sales teams effectively. Outline of This Episode [00:00] Leadership as strategic, involving coaching and mentoring [05:29] Setting clear expectations with candidates [08:17] Pre-call coaching in the AI era [12:45] How AI is changing sales metrics and activity tracking [15:20] Modern leadership do's and don'ts [18:38] Improving sales team mindset Transparency and Trust from Day One Building a high-performance sales team starts at hiring—with radical honesty. Instead of sugarcoating the role, she advocates for clear communication about expectations, quotas, and support structures from the outset. As Kristie says, "Interviewing is a two-way street ... I want to make my candidates what I call an educated consumer. I want them to understand what they're getting into." She also stresses the necessity of an 'expectation conversation'—both a verbal and written agreement outlining how communication will flow, what hours are expected, how interdepartmental collaboration is handled, and other foundational norms. This clarity allows accountability to flourish and builds trust, as you can't hold someone accountable if they don't understand what's expected of them. Rethinking Coaching: From Postmortem to Pre-Call Preparation While many sales organizations pay lip service to coaching, Kristie notes that much of it is relegated to "postmortems"—reviewing what went right or wrong after calls. With the advent of AI providing more tactical information, she suggests coaching on the front end, which means doing the pre-call coaching to make sure that reps are bringing objective judgment into this decision. The most valuable skill for sales reps, and by extension, leaders, will be objective judgment and discernment, especially as AI-generated insights become ubiquitous and sometimes misleading. Are we going to take AI's word for everything? Or are we going to layer over our own human judgment?. Sales leaders need to coach reps on how to challenge, validate, and supplement AI-driven strategies, ensuring they develop the critical thinking needed to win in complex selling environments. Methodologies and Mindsets That Matter Modern sales leaders need to leave the metaphorical cockpit and assume the role of air traffic controllers, with a broad perspective that enables them to orchestrate complex systems. Core 21st-century leadership skills, she explains, include: Systems Thinking: Understanding how the sales motion interacts with AI and other processes. Workflow Design: Defining clear divisions of responsibility between automation, augmentation, and humans. Decision Leadership: Making timely, bold decisions in a rapidly shifting landscape. Coaching for Judgment: Helping reps make nuanced decisions, not just follow playbooks. Clarity of Accountability: Explicitly defining what AI owns versus what humans own. The metric we need to be looking at is quality of output, not quantity of input. Leaders need to probe beyond perfect-looking AI CRM notes to test real understanding, for example by asking reps to close their laptops and work out where this deal could go south. The Power of Belief Kirstie also shares a story about when her sales teams were struggling, she sparingly deployed "fairy dust" and encouragement, but always paired it with tactical strategies and resources. It's not just "you've got this"—it's belief coupled with action and adaptation. Leadership, modern or otherwise, is about cultivating the mindset, capability, and trust to meet every new challenge head-on.
