Lucas and Luna sit down for a calm, data-driven conversation about retirement planning — specifically the nuts and bolts of 401(k)s, IRAs, and how to build a savings strategy that actually works for your timeline. They start by walking through the mechanics of a traditional 401(k): how contribution limits work, what employer match really means, and why the difference between pre-tax and Roth contributions matters more than most investors realize. Luna pushes Lucas on common pitfalls — like how many people treat their 401(k) as a savings account rather than a long-term growth vehicle, and why cashing out early is almost always a mistake. They then compare the three main IRA types — Traditional, Roth, and SEP — and unpack the income limits, tax implications, and withdrawal rules that can trip up even disciplined savers. Along the way, they reference real-world examples: a hypothetical 35-year-old earning $80,000 and deciding between Roth and Traditional, a self-employed freelancer weighi

How to Handle a Retirement Account After a Divorce
Aug 21, 202612 minS4
Divorce is one of the most common reasons retirement plans get derailed, yet few people know the rules. In this episode, Lucas and Luna break down the Qualified Domestic Relations Order — the QDRO — and how it lets you split a 401k or pension without triggering the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty. They walk through a real-world example of a couple splitting a $400,000 401k, explain why the 50/50 split isn't automatic, and highlight the tax trap that catches many ex-spouses when they take a cash payout instead of a rollover. They also cover the five-year rule for IRA transfers after divorce, the difference between a QDRO and a divorce decree, and why you need to get the order approved before the money moves. If you're going through a divorce, or know someone who is, this episode gives you the concrete steps to protect your retirement savings and avoid an IRS surprise. In this episode of Retirement Planning with Fexingo, Lucas and Luna walk through the critical decision you face when you leave a job: what to do with your 401k. They break down the four main options—leave it, roll it over to an IRA, roll it into your new employer's plan, or cash out—and weigh the pros and cons of each. Using a real-world example of a mid-career professional with $80,000 in a former employer's plan, they show how fees, investment choices, and withdrawal rules can shape your retirement savings. They also cover the 60-day rollover rule, the once-per-year IRA rollover limit, and the important difference between a direct and indirect rollover. Plus, they discuss when cashing out might actually make sense (hint: it's rare) and how to avoid the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty. If you're changing jobs or have an old 401k sitting around, this episode gives you a clear framework for making the best move for your future. #RetirementPlanning #401k #RolloverIRA #JobChange #Finance #Investing #RetirementSavings #IRA #FexingoBusiness #BusinessPodcast #MoneyMoves #WealthManagement #FinancialPlanning #RetirementTips #401kOptions #EarlyWithdrawal #DirectRollover #IndirectRollover Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
How to Avoid the Social Security Earnings Test Surprise
Aug 19, 202611 minS4

Using a real-world example of a 62-year-old teacher earning $60,000 a year, they break down how the test works, why the withholding isn't lost forever, and how benefits are recalculated later. They also discuss strategies like delaying benefits until full retirement age, managing income around the annual limit, and coordinating with spousal benefits. Plus, they explain the special rule for the first year of retirement and how to avoid common pitfalls. This episode is essential for anyone considering claiming Social Security before full retirement age while still earning an income.
