【Tao Te Ching】 Chapter 4 Part 3|The One Who Was Here Before You Were Born
The final two lines of Chapter 4 are where Lao Tzu stops describing the Tao "out there" and points, unmistakably, at what is nearer to you than your own thoughts. In this last of three parts, Leo and Amy sit with "transparent indeed; perhaps it exists" — the quiet awareness that's always present but never shouts — and then with the boldest line of all: that the Tao existed "before the creator, before creation." Not a ranking above anyone's God, but a pointing past every image the mind can form, toward the source that was here before the first thought. Through the question your eye can't answer (can it see itself?), a Zen pointer toward your "original face," and resonances from the Quran and the Gospel of John, they bring the whole chapter home: there is something in you that was never made, never born, untouched by every season of your life. The episode closes with a two-step practice for meeting it, and a question to carry: if something was here before you were born — and it's here right now — would you be willing to turn and meet it?
