RSR578 Chris Pandolfi - Badass Banjo and Production Magic with The Infamous Stringdusters

  Oct 2, 20261h 49m

Curious how bluegrass veterans approach recording live in the studio or manage the balance between virtual instruments and raw performances? Join us as Chris Pandolfi from The Infamous Stringdusters shares insights from decades of balancing tradition and innovation in music. My guest today is Chris Pandolfi , a founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters, known for blending traditional bluegrass with modern production techniques. With 20+ years on stage and in studio, Chris has explored everything from live ensemble recordings to experimental sampling, virtual instruments, and mixing approaches. We dive into his journey from learning Earl Scruggs to crafting innovative solo projects like Trance Banjo, plus how he manages recording setups, mic choices, and creative workflow in both rural Colorado studios and professional environments. Our conversation covers the nuts and bolts of mic placement, band setup, and the subtle art of capturing banjo's tone - whether with ribbon mics or layered stereo setups - plus the philosophy behind playing live in the studio versus overdubbing. We also explore songwriting approaches, maintaining musical chops, the importance of trusting your ears, and how the constant learning process keeps this craft rewarding. If you’re into practical insights on studio technique, live recording dynamics, or the creative edge of blending old and new sounds, this episode is packed with the kind of wisdom only a lifelong musician and producer can share. RSR577 - Marc Matthews - How to Build EDM Tracks From Start To Finish

  Sep 25, 20261h 52m

What do happy accidents, deconstructing songs, and tools like stem splitters have to do with leveling up your production skills? My guest today is Marc Matthews , a UK-based producer, mixing and mastering engineer, EDM artist, and host of Inside The Mix podcast. He works with independent artists to craft impactful, clear tracks and shares practical insights from his experience as both an artist and engineer. In this episode, we dive into Marc’s journey from learning guitar and metal bands to mastering EDM production. We discuss his approach to building a workflow, selecting sounds, and the benefits of deconstructing commercial tracks using stem splitters for education rather than copying. Marc emphasizes starting with the right foundational sounds, like choosing the perfect kick and bass, and then refining through arrangement and mixing techniques like side-chaining and EQ. We got into the importance of practical tools - such as Serum, Arturia Pigments, and even Behringer synths - and how experimenting with synthesis can inspire creativity but needs to be coupled with structured composition. Marc also shares insights on working with vocal topliners through platforms like Vocalizer, building collaborations, and managing royalty splits with agreements from platforms like Songtrust or PPL. Podcasting as a way to learn, grow, and build a catalog was a big theme, along with strategies for navigating DAWs efficiently, controlling your workflow with shortcuts, and using apps like SteerMouse for cross-application controls. Finally, we talk about balancing creative freedom with technical discipline - knowing when to trust your instincts versus when to scientificize your process - and the value of just starting now, with whatever tools and time you have. RSR575 - David Amlen - Lessons from Decades of Studio Building and Engineering

  Sep 11, 20261h 52m

What does it really take to design a studio that balances acoustic excellence with practical flow - without losing sight of the human element? My guest today is David Amlin , a veteran producer, engineer, and studio owner with over 35 years of experience across film, music, television, and more. From helping build one of New York’s largest recording facilities to producing deeply personal projects, David’s insights span a broad range of studio design, technology, and human-centered recording. In this episode, David shares the story behind his studio designs, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful acoustics, practical layouts, and the human side of making music. We discuss how studio design has evolved over the decades - highlighting considerations like door and window placement, isolation strategies, and the role of visual communication. David describes the specific features of Sound on Sound Studios in New Jersey, including custom bass traps, ISO booths, and the clever use of glass to balance visibility and sound isolation. We also explore the practical side of studio construction - covering costs, wiring, and materials - and how those decisions impact the final space. David recounts his early days building a home studio, lessons learned from decades in the industry, and the ongoing challenge of balancing technical specs with the needs of human performers. Plus, we chat about the critical importance of fostering communication and trust with musicians, and why keeping things simple often yields the best results. RSR573 - Greg Giorgio - Hybrid Studio: From Deep Snares and Cue Sends to Creative Mixing Techniques

  Aug 28, 20261h 52m

What’s the secret to capturing that deep, punchy snare sound without overdoing it? I asked Greg Giorgio about his approach to drums, and he shared how tuning and subtle miking tricks - like dampening with towels and choosing the right snare - make all the difference. It’s about working with the instrument’s natural voice. My guest today is Greg Giorgio, a producer, engineer, and mixer known for his work with artists like The National, Delta Ray, and Death Cab for Cutie. With nearly two decades working alongside producer Peter Kadis at Tarquin Studios, Greg now runs Nine Point Studios in Greenwich, Connecticut, blending technical skill with creativity. In our conversation, we explored how Greg sets up his studio for maximum flexibility - using a stereo SSL board as a summing mixer, integrating analog effects with digital workflows, and creating inspiring, workable signal paths. Greg shared his custom techniques for headphone mixes, routing, and parallel processing, emphasizing that the real magic often comes down to how you listen and respond in the moment. We delved into drum mic techniques, including how tuning, dampening, and placement contribute to that deep, resonant snare. Greg also walked through his go-to gear for drums, including big mahogany snares and the importance of not hitting drums too hard, especially when aiming for a thick, squishy sound that still feels dynamic. Plus, Greg offered insights into how he approaches distortion and saturation creatively - using parallel chains with carefully chosen plugins to add character without phase issues - and the importance of listening in context rather than soloing everything. His honesty about experimenting with routing, effects, and even unconventional room mic placements inspired me to think differently about how I work. If you’re into practical, experience-based tips for recording great drums, or curious about setting up your studio for better flow and inspiration, this episode is packed with valuable ideas.
