You can wait until the hurricane is already coming before you buy water and batteries. You can ignore the warning light on your car until you are sitting on the side of the road. You can wait until the night before the test to start studying. You can ignore your finances until the bills come due. You can put off getting ready, but eventually the moment comes when you either say, “I’m prepared,” or “I’m trying to catch up.” And catching up is always harder. There is a spiritual version of that too. God has spoken. God has warned us. God has told us the truth about who He is, who we are, what sin does, and what is coming. The question is not whether God has spoken. The question is: Will we listen and respond now, or will we wait until we are forced to deal with what we have ignored?

But conviction goes deeper. It makes us see the sin itself differently and creates a desire to turn from it. So the question is not simply, “Do I feel bad?” The better question is, “Is my sorrow actually changing the direction of my life?”
