"You helped to fuel the death machine that down the line will kill you too" And he's not talking about some hidden conspiracy. He's naming something we can verify with our own eyes. Every institution Black people walk into was designed before we got there. The rules were already written. The people in charge were already chosen. And the endpoint of that design, if we don't interrupt it, is that we get used and then we get discarded. Here's the part we keep missing. We confuse presence with power. We vote, so we think we have political power. We work, so we think we have economic power. We consume, so we think we have market power. We create the culture, so we think we have cultural power. But participation is not power. Power is control. The question was never whether we'd be in the room. The question is what we can do once we're in the room, and whether anyone has to answer to us. I am your host, the Neo Griot. This week's episode is titled "Racism Is Still Alive, Yellow Tape and Colored Lines," from Kendrick Lamar. The lyric: "Racism is still alive, yellow tape and colored lines." Yellow tape. The crime-scene tape that goes up around a Black body. Racism as enforcement — the line the state draws around the violence done to us. Colored lines. The color line. The lines drawn on maps and in schools and between neighborhoods that sorted whole families into worth and worthlessness. The tape is the violence. The lines are the structure. The quiet implementation of hierarchy that happens before the violence ever has to show up. And that's the thing I want to sit with this week. Who draws the line? Who decides what counts, who belongs on which side? None of it was ever natural. It was decided. By people. And racism is still alive because the deciding never stopped.   Send us Fan Mail That's Nas. "Black Zombie." He wasn't talking about horror movies. He was talking about us. Walking talking dead. Breathing, but on autopilot. Alive, but not living. Bodies moving through days somebody else designed. And that middle line — "though we think we're living" — is the dangerous part. We think we're alive. We think we're free. We mistake movement for direction. Then the second line lands harder. We just copy-cat, following the system. Not building. Not questioning. Copying. Following a system we didn't write and don't control. But that same song has another line. And this one is the cure. "Envisioning ownership, yo it can happen. What do we own? Not enough land, not enough homes. Not enough banks to give my brother a loan. What do we own? The skin on our backs — we rent and we ask for reparations, then they hit us with tax." Listen to what Nas does there. The first line is hope. Ownership can happen. The vision isn't fantasy. Then he runs the honest inventory. What do we own? Not enough land. Not enough homes. Not enough banks to give each other a loan. We don't even own the skin on our backs — we rent it, we ask for it back, and when restitution finally comes, they tax it. One song. Two truths. The condition and the possibility. We're walking dead because we follow a system we don't own. And the only cure for following is owning. RBT is at three hundred episodes. Most people would use that number to look backward. I'm not going to do that. Three hundred episodes of examining politics, religion, race, economics and culture comes down to one question. What have we actually learned about how power works? Three hundred episodes represents persistence. But persistence by itself isn't power. The question after all this time is sharper than the one we started with. We've watched Black faces take positions of authority. We've watched representation arrive. We've watched access open up. And the underlying conditions haven't moved the way they were supposed to. Something about that equation doesn't add up. This episode is about what does. So here is the lesson. Power is not a Black face in a position of authority. It is not the right to complain. It is not being represented in somebody else's institution. It is not being allowed to participate. Power is having meaningful control over the circumstances that shape your life. And control, at its most concrete, is ownership. That's what Nas was pointing at. You can't control what you don't own. So you follow. And following is how you end up as the walking dead. That idea runs through everything this week. George Jackson defines liberation as controlling the conditions of your daily life. Economic withdrawal asks whether Black people can control where our money goes. Trump's five thousand dollar promise asks why a government benefit should depend on keeping one party in power. A deputy's conduct in a North Carolina courthouse asks whether the badge outranks the truth. A missionary in Uganda asks when help becomes control. And Taylor Townsend shows what it looks like when an institution judges you but doesn't get to define you. The question in all episodes is the same. Who has power, over whom, and what lets them keep it.   Send us Fan Mail That's BLK ODYSSY — "BLK Revolution." And before we go anywhere else, I want to sit in those two lines, because they name this whole episode. "No longer complacent with surviving." Read that slow. Complacent — with surviving. We got comfortable just making it. Comfortable being alive but not free. Being employed but not owning. Being seen but not in control. Survival is a floor. It was never supposed to be the ceiling. And somewhere along the way, too many of us mistook the floor for the whole building. "We are the Black revolution." Not they. Not someday. Not waiting on a leader, or a permission slip, or a savior. We are. Present tense. The revolution was never a thing that happens to us. It's a thing we are. And the very next line of that song is the part the world already quietly knows — Black is the new gold. Black been the new gold. Our music, our style, our language, our movement — the whole world has been renting it, borrowing it, and paying us in "exposure" instead of ownership. This week we're talking about what happens when we stop renting out the revolution and start owning it. Because whoever owns the story owns what's possible. Marcus Garvey said it before any of us — we've got to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery, because nobody can free your mind but you. And the first thing you own is the story you tell about yourself. That's the work tonight. Let's get into it.   Send us Fan Mail Crawling through a systematic maze. And it pains to demise. Pain in our eyes. Strain of drownin', wading into your lies. Degradation so loud that you can't hear the sound of our cries. That's D'Angelo. "The Charade." And it's the title of this episode, because those lines describe more Black political reality than a shelf of civics textbooks. A maze isn't random. A maze is built. Somebody laid the walls, set the turns, and made sure the path that looks like an exit loops you right back to where you started. That's what D'Angelo means by “systematic.” The confusion isn't an accident. It's the design. And "degradation so loud that you can't hear the sound of our cries." Read that line again. The machinery is so loud it drowns out the very people it was built to contain. That's the theme of Episode 298. Not just the maze — but who owns it.
