  Michael Nappi spent roughly 16 years of his life behind bars. Growing up in Long Beach, California, Michael entered juvenile hall at just 12 years old. From there came gangs, violence, drugs, armed robbery, and years inside the prison system. For a long time, prison wasn’t something he feared returning to. It was the life he expected. Then things started to change. While incarcerated, Michael’s father visited him while battling terminal cancer and told him, “This isn’t what I wanted for you.” After losing his father and another major influence from his past, Michael began questioning everything he had built his identity around. That led him to one of the biggest questions of his life: How do you rewire your brain after years of violence, gangs, addiction, and prison? For Michael, part of that answer came through surrendering his life to God. He began focusing on personal development, peer mentorship, leadership, discipline, and helping other incarcerated men make better choices. What once made him a leader in a destructive lifestyle eventually became the foundation for leading people in a positive direction.   Matthew Wyatt’s story is one of addiction, destruction, faith, redemption, and what can happen when a man finally reaches the point of complete surrender. In this episode of Rain Brings Growth, Matthew shares the brutally honest story behind the man people see today. Growing up in a deeply rooted LDS/Mormon family in small-town Washington, Matthew was raised around faith but eventually began questioning what he had been taught. His search for truth led him to study different religions, wrestle with the identity of Jesus, and eventually develop a completely different understanding of Christianity and his relationship with God. But Matthew’s spiritual journey was only part of the battle. After being prescribed pain medication, what began as legitimate use slowly developed into a devastating prescription drug addiction. His addiction escalated into stealing, prescription fraud, multiple dealers, arrests, felony charges, jail, job loss, alcoholism, broken trust, and a marriage hanging by a thread. At one of the lowest points of his life, Matthew’s wife discovered dozens of empty vodka bottles he had hidden from his family. Divorce papers were on the table, and Matthew believed his wife and daughter would be better off without him. On July 20, 2009, he decided to take his own life. But in the final moments, something changed. Matthew cried out to God and surrendered everything. The next morning, he and his wife began calling rehab facilities. The only facility that called him back was a faith-based treatment center. What was supposed to be 30 days became 90 days. Matthew says that season became less about simply overcoming addiction and more about falling in love with Jesus. From there, his life began rebuilding piece by piece. His marriage survived. His relationship with his daughter was restored. He entered ministry, became a youth pastor, family care pastor, and eventually returned to the same small Washington town where his addiction and arrest had once become public knowledge — this time as a lead pastor. Matthew also shares the powerful story of using the same Bible that once held his suicide note to eventually preach, minister to others, and even lead his father-in-law to Christ before his death. Years later, Matthew would earn multiple degrees, including a doctorate in ministry, while continuing to follow what he believed God was calling him to do. After leaving pastoral ministry, moving to Idaho, and spending nearly 10 months driving DoorDash despite his education and ministry experience, another door eventually opened. Today, Matthew serves as Church Engagement Director for the Idaho Family Policy Center, working with pastors and churches across Idaho while continuing his ministry outside of the traditional pastor role. This conversation goes far beyond addiction recovery.   In Episode 71 of the Rain Brings Growth Podcast, Matt sits down with Victor Villarreal for one of the most raw and powerful stories shared on the show. Victor grew up in Caldwell, Idaho with six sisters, a single mom, and a childhood marked by domestic violence, drug abuse, alcoholism, sexual abuse, and the pressure of becoming a protector far too young. From an early age, he felt responsible for protecting his sisters while trying to survive chaos inside the home. At 13, Victor was jumped into a gang. By 14, he was walking around with a sawed-off shotgun. By 16, he was a father. And before he ever had the chance to fully understand who he was, Victor was already caught in street life, survival mode, violence, drugs, and a distorted idea of love, loyalty, and manhood. Victor opens up about being sexually abused, watching domestic violence at home, being labeled as the problem, being placed on medications instead of being asked what was happening behind closed doors, and how abuse shaped the way he viewed love, family, masculinity, and protection. He also shares how gang life gave him a sense of brotherhood that felt familiar because violence followed by acceptance was already normalized in his home. This episode dives into Victor’s journey through gang life, becoming a teen father, a drive-by shooting at his family’s home, leaving Caldwell to try to build a better life, getting involved in the drug trade, being shot, going to juvenile prison, spending years away from his daughter and family, and eventually entering the adult prison system.
