Psych Talk
Episode 293 | Ask the Question: Suicide Conversations and Prevention
In today's episode of Psych Talk I bring you a solo episode for National Suicide Prevention Month. In this episode I discuss recent suicide statistics, as well as populations that are at increased risk for suicide. I provide information on what suicidal thoughts are and the spectrum of suicide. I discuss warning signs and risk factors of suicide, while highlighting that not everyone who exhibits these risk factors and warning signs are suicidal and not all suicidal people exhibit these warning signs. I discuss how to approach the conversation of suicide with a loved one whom you are worried about, as well as the next steps after a suicidal disclosure, highlighting many avenues and approaches to care. I discuss prevention efforts for suicide at both the individual and population level, emphasizing what the research says about effective suicide prevention strategies. I end the episode discussing how we need to continue to have these conversations outside of suicide prevention month and leave listeners with a message of hope.
