54. How to Choose Yourself When Your Choices Affect Other People with Sheri Fitzner
What does it actually mean to choose yourself when your choices affect other people? In this episode, I’m joined by hypnotherapist Sheri Fitzner for a conversation about sovereignty, overfunctioning, and why knowing you have a choice doesn’t always make it easy to actually choose differently. We talk about the roles and identities we learn to inhabit in order to feel loved, worthy, safe, and accepted—and what happens when those roles start to feel more exhausting than protective. Sheri walks us through the process she uses with clients to move from simply recognizing a pattern to actually being able to make a different choice: recognition, acknowledgement, validation, and eventually, accountability. We also get into what this looks like in real life: being the easy one, becoming a chameleon at work, struggling to receive support, feeling responsible for other people’s reactions, anticipating everything that could go wrong, and believing that changing your role will somehow threaten the relationships and structures around you. Plus, we talk about why discomfort doesn’t necessarily mean you’re unsafe, how small experiments can expand your capacity to choose differently, and how hypnotherapy can help you hear what’s actually true for you underneath everyone else’s expectations. In this episode, we talk about: What sovereignty actually means Why overfunctioning is often a symptom of something deeper The identities we create in order to feel safe, loved, and accepted Why awareness alone doesn’t automatically create change Recognition → acknowledgement → validation → accountability The difference between discomfort and actual lack of safety Why changing your “dance moves” changes your relationships Learning to receive support instead of automatically saying “I’ve got it” Using small, real-life experiments to build capacity for bigger changes How hypnosis can help you reconnect with your own truth and intuition Connect with Sheri: Follow her on IG @hypnoforhealing How to work with Sheri Sheri will also be joining us at The Retreat, October 15–18 in the Catskills , where she’ll guide us through a hypnosis session designed to support this work from the subconscious level. The Retreat is an intimate four-day experience for six women who are ready to stop just understanding their patterns and start practicing a different way of living—with three months of coaching and integration support afterward to help those changes stick. Registration closes September 27. LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RETREAT ✨ Start Here New to my work? Explore the podcast, free resources, Human Design guide, and more. Any questions?
