Beyond the Daily Pill: The Injection Shaking Up Bipolar Treatment
A new study published in The American Journal of Psychiatry analyzed electronic health records from 2,086 individuals with bipolar disorder in Hong Kong treated between 2004 and 2023. While long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIAs) are already widely recognized for treating schizophrenia, robust comparative guidance for bipolar disorder has historically been limited. The researchers found that patients receiving LAIAs had a significantly lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization compared to those on traditional oral antipsychotics. In addition, the injectable treatments were tied to a reduced recurrence rate of manic and mixed episodes, offering compelling evidence for their expanded clinical role.
