That single idea confronts a temptation many of us carry: trying to fix ourselves through sheer effort, better phrasing, or a tougher mindset. Those tools can help, but they are not the engine of Christian spiritual growth. We talk honestly about calling, correction, and the painful gap between where we are and where we believe God is leading us. A calling can be real while maturity is still under construction. We reflect on how easy it is to confuse “not ready” with “not called,” and how an inner rebel can turn feedback into a fight. Along the way, we connect Jacob’s night of wrestling and his limp to our own stories: we move into the next day not finished, but different. We talk about what happens when you genuinely believe God led you somewhere, but the path turns confusing, lonely, and expensive, emotionally and spiritually. I share a defining season from seminary where an advisory group has the power to end my plans, and how that moment exposes the real question many of us carry: not “Do I trust God?” but “What does trusting God look like right now?” From there, we step into Genesis and follow Jacob as God tells him to return home with no explanation of the outcome. Jacob obeys, then hears that Esau is coming with 400 men. Fear surges, plans get made, prayers get honest, and Jacob reaches the point where community cannot go further for him. That tension helps us name something crucial about Christian guidance and discernment: circumstances and voices can bring information, but only the Shepherd can give orientation. We also sit with Genesis 32 and the night Jacob wrestles for a blessing. Wrestling is not faithlessness; sometimes it is what faith looks like when the future is unclear. We open Genesis 31:3 and step into Jacob’s story at the exact moment obedience gets complicated: God gives a clear direction but not a clear outcome, and Jacob has to walk toward home while Esau approaches with 400 men. If you have ever asked, “Did I hear God right?” or “What am I supposed to do now?” you will feel seen. We also share a personal crossroads from seminary, when an advisory group held the power to say “you cannot come back.” That kind of pressure exposes how easy it is to confuse our interpretation of a calling with the only faithful path forward. We talk about why phrases like “just trust God” can land hollow, and how spiritual maturity asks better questions: Am I holding on because God told me to, or because letting go feels like failure? Am I trying to leave because God is leading somewhere else, or because staying hurts? Along the way we challenge a common myth about spiritual guidance: that following God always comes with perfect peace and perfectly aligned circumstances. Fear does not automatically mean stop. Difficulty does not automatically mean keep going. Circumstances give information, but the Shepherd gives orientation, and yesterday’s guidance never replaces today’s dependence. We end with Jacob alone, wrestling through the night, and a surprising reminder that wrestling with God can be part of faith, not a departure from it. You can spend years thinking “follow Jesus” means constant movement, big decisions, and dramatic stories, then discover the real challenge is trust. We lean into John 10:27 where Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice… and they follow me,” and we slow down long enough to ask what that actually requires when you do not know the destination. We talk about why Jesus rarely gives a full map, and why demanding certainty can quietly flip the relationship so we become the judge of the call. Instead, discipleship grows out of familiarity with the Shepherd’s voice. We share how faith often becomes clearer in retrospect, and how the next step may be impossible to predict but still possible to obey. Then we name three practical forms of following: going when Jesus leads into a new assignment, learning and serving faithfully where you are, and stopping your allegiance to voices that try to lead you. Fear, exhaustion, failure, pain, and other people can speak, sometimes with real information, but they do not get to be the shepherd. We also explore the communal side of faith: Jesus gathers a flock, and communion becomes a living “yes” we say together before we return to ordinary life.
