Episode #49
AND… - NL
Connect with me here in text… tell me where you are listening. You can be doing everything “right” and still feel like you are bracing for impact. We start with a simple image that gets uncomfortably accurate fast: the hats we learn to wear in our families. The strong one, the helper, the achiever, the peacemaker, the rebel, the comic relief. Some of those roles hold real gifts, but they can also become masks we use to manage tension, avoid rejection, and keep the vulnerable parts of us out of reach. From there, we name the cost. Living from self-protection creates nonstop internal noise: reading the room, second-guessing tone, chasing approval, fearing failure, hiding struggle, and trying to control what happens next. It is exhausting, and it can distort how we interpret our circumstances. We explore what John 10:27 means when Jesus says, “I know them,” and why being fully known can feel unsafe when access has often led to pain. Then we lean into the “and.” Jesus does not only know us; he makes his home in us (John 14:23). That changes the whole map. Exhaustion, fear, and pain can give us information, but they cannot give us orientation. We share a story from a season of burnout in seminary where failure felt like proof of a broken calling, and how one truth from Jesus re-centered everything: the heart can still be aligned with God even when the rest of us is loud, tired, and confused. We close with a practical invitation toward stillness, congruence with Christ, and a way of love that is no longer just protective, but formed by the Shepherd at the center. If this helped you name the hat you have been wearing, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a review. What part of the noise are you ready to stop letting define you?
