Choose Your Discomfort: The Mindset Shift That Helps You Let Go of Guilt, Perfectionism and People-Pleasing
Sep 7, 202647 min
You know you're overwhelmed. You know you're putting too much pressure on yourself and maybe you even know you need to let some things go. So why is it so hard? In this episode of Overcaffeinated and Out of Effs , I’m joined by life coach Nicky Bevan for a conversation about the mindset behind so many of the struggles overwhelmed working moms face from mom guilt and perfectionism to people-pleasing, boundaries and the pressure to keep everyone happy. Nicky shares her own experience of trying to make sure everything was done right and everyone else was taken care of while barely taking care of herself. We also talk about something so many moms struggle with: uncomfortable emotions. Because feeling guilty doesn't necessarily mean you've done something wrong. Feeling anxious doesn't necessarily mean something bad is going to happen. And feeling uncomfortable when you say no, set a boundary or let someone else do something differently doesn't mean you need to change your decision. Sometimes learning to think differently and allowing yourself to experience those uncomfortable feelings is an important part of stepping out of the patterns that are keeping you overwhelmed. In this episode we talk about: How your thoughts influence the way you feel and the choices you make Why accomplished working moms can still feel like they're never doing enough Why being kinder to yourself doesn't mean lowering your standards How to stop taking responsibility for everyone else's feelings How our desire to protect our kids from disappointment can sometimes make it harder to let them learn from their own experiences Nicky also introduces a powerful idea: choose your discomfort. You can experience the temporary discomfort of saying no, setting the boundary, letting someone be disappointed or watching something get done differently than you would do it or you can avoid that discomfort and continue saying yes, taking everything on and trying to keep everyone happy. You might not be able to completely eliminate mom guilt, self-doubt, fear or anxiety. And that's not necessarily the goal. The goal is learning that those feelings can be there without being in charge. What If Time Is More Valuable Than Money? Rethinking Success As A Working Mom
Aug 31, 202659 min
What does success look like when you’re a working or career-minded mom? Is it making more money, climbing the ladder or growing a business? Or for some (or many) could having more time actually be worth more? In this episode of Overcaffeinated and Out of Effs , I’m joined by Colleen Budde, a mechanical engineer turned entrepreneur, small business strategist and mom of three. Colleen shares her experience navigating motherhood, career, entrepreneurship and burnout, and how those experiences have changed the way she thinks about success. One thing Colleen said during our conversation really stuck with me: “We’re not rich in money, but we’re rich in time.” Colleen opens up about the realities of building multiple businesses while raising three kids, the burnout she’s experienced along the way and the trade-offs she and her family have intentionally made to create a life that works for them. We talk about the tension between ambition and motherhood, the guilt that can come with still wanting a meaningful career after becoming a mom and why work and family don’t always fit neatly together. We also explore what it means to stop chasing someone else’s definition of success and start asking ourselves, “What do I actually want my life to look like?” In this episode we talk about: Colleen's transition from mechanical engineer to entrepreneur and business owner Why career-minded moms can feel pulled between their ambition and their families Why traditional definitions of success don't always work once you become a mother What she means when she ways her family might be, “rich in money,” but they're, “rich in time” How boundaries, flexibility and intentional choices can make work and family life more sustainable Find Colleen at: Consulting Website: https://www.buddeconsultinggroup.com/ Coworking Website: https://www.officeevolution.com/locations/usa/michigan/troy/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/colleen-budde-5417991a/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/colleen_the_/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@colleen_the Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61588492731044 Looking for extra support? The Promotion She Didn't Get (And How It Changed Her Life For The Better)
Aug 24, 202643 min
Sometimes the thing that feels like a devastating setback turnout to be exactly what you needed. In this episode of Overcaffeinated and Out of Effs I sit down with Sarah Wimberley, a working mom of three who spent months pushing herself toward a promotion she thought she wanted. She was exhausted, pouring almost all of her energy into work and coming home with very little left for her family but at the time, she didn't recognize what she was experiencing as burnout. Then she didn't get the promotion. What initially felt embarrassing, infuriating and deeply personal ultimately became the catalyst for a major change. Sarah left the organization, stepped into a completely different work environment and began rebuilding, not just her career, but her confidence, her relationships and parts of herself that had gotten lost along the way. In this episode, Sarah shares what burnout actually looked like for her, why so much of her identity became wrapped up in her career and what happened when she finally started making herself and her needs a priority. In this episode we talk about: The unexpected challenges Sarah faced when she became a working mom Why she didn't recognize her burnout until she was on the other side of it Why getting the promotion felt so important and the painful impact of being passed over How tying so much of our identity and self-worth to our careers can affect us when something goes wrong Why sometimes the scary change you're avoiding might be exactly what you need As Sarah says at the end of our conversation, do the scary thing. The Working Mom Trade-Off And The Myth Of 'Having It All'
Aug 17, 202639 min
If you're a working mom, I'm willing to bet at some point you've felt the pressure to somehow do it all, and do it all well. Be successful at work. Be present with your kids. Make time for your marriage. Keep up with everything at home. Take care of yourself. And somehow find enough hours in the day to make all of that happen. The truth is, even for those who appear to have it all, there is always a trade-off. In this episode of Overcaffeinated and Out of Effs I sit down with Katrina Hofstetter, an estate planning attorney, business owner and mom of three about what it really looks like to balance a demanding career with motherhood, and why being your own boss doesn't necessarily make work-life balance easier. Katrina shares how she built a rapidly growing law practice while raising three boys, what burnout looks like for her, and how working from home has blurred the boundaries between her career and family life. We also talk about the pressure to always be available, the boundaries she’s had to put in place with clients and work, and the difficult realization that flexibility still doesn’t mean you can do everything. In this episode we talk about: What burnout can look and feel like when you're constantly in “go mode” Why working from home can make it harder (not easier) to separate work and family life The impact burnout can have on patience, parenting and your relationship with your spouse Why career success and flexibility don't eliminate the trade-offs of being a working mom Letting go of the expectation that you should somehow be able to “do it all” One of the biggest takeaways from our conversation is a hard truth so many working moms need to hear: there is no perfect situation where you get to say yes to everything. Sometimes you give more to work. Other times you give more to family. There will be times when you have to miss something, delegate or admit that you simply don't have the capacity to do one more thing. That doesn't mean you're doing it wrong. The goal isn't figuring out how to “have it all.” It's about deciding what matters most right now (knowing that can, and likely will, change) and giving yourself permission to let the rest go. Aug 10, 202641 min
If you've been wondering, "Why am I always so tired?" even after getting enough sleep, you are definitely not alone.
