Professional organizer and coach Tracy Hoth joins me to talk downsizing, and she keeps dropping golden nuggets the whole time. We talk about decluttering tips for the fear of regret, the mindset shift that makes letting go so much easier, and why staging every room like you're moving is the fastest way to see what actually matters to you. β¨ How to reframe the fear of "what if I regret giving this away" so it stops paralyzing your decisions Why staging each room as if you're moving instantly clarifies what you'd take with you β What Tracy's grown kids said about their childhood stuff β¨ How to work through downsizing when everyone in the family is at a different level of readiness A simple, honest definition of "organized" that is clear and simple Tracy Hoth's website: simplysquaredaway.com The Organized Coach Podcast (Tracy's podcast) Tracy's free 15 Minute Declutter Challenge: simplysquaredaway.com/declutter If you know what you have, and you can find it and put it away easily, you're organized. Thinking about decanting, labeling, or color-coding your whole house? I'm breaking down 5 organizing trends that often backfire, plus the simple fix for each one this week. I used to hand clients whatever they asked for, matching canisters, detailed labels, the works. These days I know better, and in this episode I'm walking you through 5 organizing trends, decanting, labeling, color-coding, rigid bins, and velvet hangers, that people regret once the honeymoon phase wears off. You'll learn exactly where each one earns its place in your home, and the one question to ask before you buy any of it. Why decanting everything into matching canisters can turn into a chore nobody wants, and which items are actually worth it The labeling habit that looks so good on install day and falls apart by week two Why color-coded systems, from pantries to file folders, usually don't survive real life What happens when you buy a perfectly-fitted bin system for a category that's still changing The real reason velvet hangers cause more frustration than they solve The one question to ask yourself before your next organizing purchase Wondering if you've made a mistake with one of these? Schedule your Free Consultation with me: https://fireflybridge.com/consultation None of these five things are bad ideas. They're just tools that need the right home and the right amount. 119. Does a Messy Desk Make You More Creative? (Did Science Change Its Mind?)
Jul 14, 202617 minS1
The famous messy desk study everyone quotes got turned into a permission slip for clutter. Here's the real research, and where a little mess actually helps you think. You know that photo of Einstein's messy desk that everyone uses to justify never cleaning up? I went and read the actual messy desk study, plus what happened when other researchers tried to repeat it, and the real answer is a lot more useful than "mess equals genius." This episode breaks down what the research really says and helps you figure out exactly which piles in your house are earning their keep. β¨ What Kathleen Vohs's original 2013 study on messy desks and creativity actually found, and it's not what the headlines said π Why a 2019 replication study couldn't back up the "messy desk makes you a genius" claim π The real difference between mess that's actively working for you and mess that's just sitting there draining your energy β How to give a messy project space a boundary so it doesn't take over the rest of your home π― A simple weekly checkpoint to know if a project is still active or if it's just been abandoned ππ Get a Free 30-minute consultation with me: https://fireflybridge.com/consultation If you've been using "science" to defend that one pile in your house, this episode will help you figure out if it's actually earning that pass.
