Beyond Thirst: What Does It Really Take to Rehydrate? with Dr. Christopher Labos
We often hear that we need to drink plenty of fluids, but is staying hydrated always as simple as drinking more water? And with so many hydration options available, how do we know what we actually need, when we need it, and what the science tells us? Dr. Christopher Labos is a cardiologist and epidemiologist based in Montreal. He is a Course Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Occupational Health, an Affiliate Member of the Department of Global and Public Health, and an Associate with McGill University’s Office for Science and Society, where he contributes to its mission of promoting critical thinking and communicating science to the public. Dr. Labos is also an accomplished science communicator, author, and co-host of the award-winning podcast The Body of Evidence. His book, Does Coffee Cause Cancer? And 8 More Myths about the Food We Eat, examines common health and nutrition claims through the lens of scientific evidence. He has a regular medical column with the Montreal Gazette and produces a video series called “On Second Thought” for Medscape. Through his writing, podcasting, and media appearances, he helps audiences make sense of health information and distinguish evidence from misinformation. In this episode, Dr. Labos discusses the science of hydration and rehydration, common misconceptions about fluid replacement, and how our hydration needs can differ depending on the situation.
