Vision Zero Reimagined: Safer Streets Ahead | New York City News
Sep 15, 20262 min
The city’s new “Vision Zero Reimagined” plan aims to slash traffic deaths with over 100 bold policies — from speed cameras and pedestrian zones to towing more cars and holding delivery companies accountable. While the original Vision Zero cut fatalities by 30%, 210 lives were still lost in 2025. Supporters like Lynn and Paul see fewer cars as a chance to boost public transit, but drivers like Phillip fear reduced mobility if transit isn’t reliable. With eight key goals — removing dangerous drivers, redesigning streets, and using data-driven enforcement — the administration is pushing hard to make streets safer for everyone, even as some measures await Albany approval. NYC Building Emissions Law Takes Shape | New York City News
Sep 15, 20262 min
New York City’s bold climate move is paying off: most big buildings are hitting or racing toward carbon targets under Local Law 97. While the first phase was designed to be manageable, the real test looms by 2030—with stricter limits forcing upgrades like solar, insulation, and electric heating. Some owners are opting for fines over fixes, but the city’s supportive hand—extensions, reminders, and programs like NYC Accelerator—is helping. Officials are also tweaking how emissions are measured, with a focus on fairness for affordable housing. The message? Big changes are coming, but help is here to make them work. Vote on Faster Government | New York City News
Sep 15, 20262 min
New York City is launching a $1.6 million voter education campaign to explain five major charter changes headed to the November ballot, aiming to help residents make informed decisions without pushing any agenda. Led by the Commission on Government Efficiency, the “Vote on Faster Government” initiative uses cartoons, multilingual ads, subway posters, and taxi screens to simplify complex reforms—from speeding up permits to creating a rainy-day fund. While supporters tout efficiency gains, critics warn some proposals could slash public input and weaken oversight. With Middle Seat handling outreach, COGE’s goal is clear: boost civic understanding and turnout—so voters can decide for themselves. Mayor’s Bold Plan to Save Lives on Streets | New York City News
Sep 15, 20262 min
Mayor Zohran Mamdani is launching a bold, decade-long plan to slash traffic deaths in New York City, building on Vision Zero’s legacy since 2014. With a rough summer of hit-and-run fatalities sparking protests, the mayor’s strategy includes pedestrian-only zones, harsher penalties for speeding and impaired driving, and restoring “daylighting” at intersections by removing curb parking. A new state law already allows lowering speed limits to 15 mph on more streets, while the administration pushes for drug-impaired driving charges and license plate seizures for repeat offenders. To support equitable mobility, a mobile wallet system will offer discounted transit and shared mobility access for low-income residents. Advocates see this as a transformative step toward reclaiming public space from cars and creating a safer, more livable city — all while preventing tragedies before they happen.
