Post-Traumatic Growth Up Close: A Coma, Neuroplasticity & the Way Back with Dr. Justin Kennedy
In the Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®) certification program there's an idea we keep coming back to: post-traumatic growth. The possibility that moving through trauma can redirect a life toward something bigger and more purposeful. It's easy to describe and much harder to point at. Dr. Justin Kennedy is what it looks like up close. He was 29, on a motorbike on a wet road in Cape Town, when a car came out of nowhere. His helmet smashed open and so did his head, and the traumatic brain injury that followed left him in a coma. Years later he told Marshall Goldsmith that the hardest part had not been learning to walk again. The hardest part was learning how to feel happy again. In this episode, Siv sits down with Justin to trace that arc: the subdural haemorrhage and the slow, twenty-hours-a-day emergence from a coma; the first time he let go of the parallel bars and walked alone; the strange discovery that when you can't say the word "exuberant," you struggle to feel it; the depression nobody warned him about, and the two unglamorous ingredients — something to grapple with, and people who love you — that moved him from surviving into building. It's also a conversation about routes in. Justin could hear every word of psychotherapy and couldn't speak enough to use it — worth sitting with for anyone whose work goes through the body rather than through language, Neurogenic Tremoring included. What grew out of the recovery was a doctoral thesis, a TED talk, a book, and the npn Hub — a global community of practitioners who want applied neuroscience out of the journals and into real rooms. Justin and Siv first met there, and Neurogenic Integration has since formed a partnership with the npn Hub: graduates of our Online TRE® Certification can go on to earn the npn neuroplastician credential — validation from an external, international advisory board. Justin is also offering listeners a free copy of his book Brain Reboot and a VIP guest pass to the hub. ⏱ KEY HIGHLIGHTS 0:00 - Welcome & introductions 2:40 - A rainy day in Cape Town and the car that came out of nowhere 4:30 - Coming out of a coma isn't waking up 6:35 - The first goal: walking again 7:15 - Letting go of the rails 8:36 - "The Broca centre in my brain was broken" 9:41 - If you can't say "exuberant," can you feel it? 11:51 - Neuroplasticity becomes the whole universe 13:57 - The two ingredients: a goal and social support 15:38 - Healing alone versus healing in a tribe 17:11 - "The brain is a social organ" 18:57 - "Why don't we start an institute?" — the prakademic idea 21:25 - Speaking on the science, not in the science 22:54 - Where TRE® fits in a neuroscience community 26:30 - "No professors or princesses — we're all wearing the same crown" 30:34 - Inside the hub: orientation, brain pods and round tables 3 8:09 - The round table whose host never showed up 40:20 - Closing reflections RESOURCES & LINKS Your VIP Neuroplastician Pass: JOIN HERE - on the top right A Apply: npnGuest-30 in ‘’ Add Promo Code’ ’ - bottom left I also gave you access NeuroStarter.com for free with your email Here’s the Neuroplastician® Credential As promised here's my book Brain Reboot And our recent Harvard Business Review article Connect with Dr. Justin Kennedy — professor, applied neuroscientist, executive coach, author of Brain Reboot , and founder of the npn Hub, a credentialing body and community of practice for practitioners applying neuroplasticity-based tools: https://npnhub.com Also mentioned: Marshall Goldsmith (executive coach, and a contributor to Brain Reboot ), the npn Institute and the neuroplastician credential, and Professors Michael Platt and Paul Zak, who have both dropped into hub round tables.
