My FX Buddies Blog After weeks of headlines about removing zeros from the Iraqi dinar, a new report suggests that the discussion may be moving in a completely different direction. According to a report from 964 Media, discussions involving members of Iraq's Parliamentary Finance Committee are reportedly focusing on changing the current Iraqi currency and issuing a new series of banknotes rather than removing zeros. The potential goals being discussed are much bigger than simply printing new notes. A currency replacement could potentially be used to: Replace worn-out banknotes Introduce stronger security features Remove counterfeit currency from circulation Bring cash held outside the banking system back into banks Better monitor Iraq's circulating money supply Encourage large holders of cash to open bank accounts and document the source of their funds The report says that more than 100 trillion Iraqi dinars may currently be outside the banking system, held in homes, businesses, and circulating through Iraq's cash-based economy. One proposal reportedly being discussed would make the exchange of large amounts of old currency subject to additional banking procedures, potentially including opening a bank account, depositing the funds, and verifying the source of the money. Amounts reportedly being discussed could involve cash holdings in the range of approximately 100–150 million dinars, although the article stresses that these details have not been finalized.
