LET'S ROLL: The Story of United Flight 93
On September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 departed Newark International Airport bound for San Francisco. It would never reach its destination. While Flight 93 was still in the air, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 struck the World Trade Center in New York, and American Airlines Flight 77 was headed toward the Pentagon. The passengers and crew aboard Flight 93 initially had no way of knowing that America was under attack—or that their own aircraft would soon become part of it. In this special September 11 episode of Music City 911, we follow the story of United Flight 93 from its delayed departure from Newark through the hijacking, the increasingly alarming transmissions heard by air traffic controllers, the phone calls made by passengers and crew, and the realization aboard the aircraft that the hijackers likely intended to use Flight 93 as a weapon. Those calls changed everything. Passengers and crew began sharing what they had learned from people on the ground. Knowing what had already happened in New York and Washington, a group aboard Flight 93 made the decision to fight back. Their attempt to retake the aircraft ended when Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m. All 40 passengers and crew members aboard were killed, along with the four hijackers. No one on the ground was killed. This episode uses actual air traffic control recordings, authentic passenger and crew voicemail recordings, historical photographs, archival material, documents, maps and visual recreations to tell the story of Flight 93 and the people aboard it. Some scenes in this episode are visual recreations of events for which no original video footage exists.
