Money is Not Your Problem
Ep.48 ️ TODAY your kids are learning money from you — even when you're not teaching!
Do you remember the first thing you ever heard about money? Not a lesson — a comment. Something a parent said in the car, or at the kitchen table, when they didn't know you were listening. Whatever it was, it is probably still shaping how you handle money today. And if you are a parent, your kids are hearing you the same way right now. This week's episode is a live recording of a breakout session I gave to educators at a Gear Up National event. But the content is not just for teachers. It is for anyone who is the "money person" in someone else's life — a parent, a mentor, an aunt, a coach. The way we talk about money in front of the people we love shapes what they believe is possible for themselves. I walk you through my own trajectory. Growing up in Brazil, where graduating debt-free was just the norm. Moving to the United States and being told student loans were "not bad debt." $300,000 in combined debt with my husband. A foreclosure in 2008. Paying it all off through the Dave Ramsey program. Discovering a hidden credit card afterward — what I call financial infidelity — and having to rebuild from there. And how each of those moments shaped the way I now teach money to Gear Up students and their families. In this episode, you will learn: Why "debt is normal" is a story we inherit — and how to draw the line in your own house The real first-year college dropout number (it is not 33%) What a 14-year-old signed herself up for after overhearing her mom talk about college costs — and why it backfired How to teach money math, mindset, and decision-making without waiting on the school to do it for you The three areas that actually move the needle for students and families: money knowledge, mindset and beliefs, and decision-making Here is your assignment this week. Pick one person in your life — your child, your niece, a student, a friend's kid. Open one honest conversation about money. Not a lecture. A conversation. Share one mistake you made and what you learned from it. That is the whole assignment. Seven days. One conversation. If you have ever been the "money person" in your family and had no one to teach you first, this episode is for you.
