Episode #15 - AI Maturity: Moving from Adoption to Real Value
AI adoption is no longer simply a question of whether organisations are using AI. The more important leadership question is whether AI is creating meaningful value — and whether organisations are building the culture, capability and governance needed to use it responsibly. In this episode of The Mindful CIO, Nathalie Heynderickx speaks with AI leader and innovation practitioner Dheeren Velu about what responsible AI adoption looks like as AI capabilities rapidly evolve. Dheeren shares his perspective on the changing maturity of AI across organisations, challenging leaders to look beyond the number of tools, licences or users and focus instead on outcomes, impact and organisational value. The conversation explores the growing importance of AI governance, particularly as agentic AI and long-horizon workflows introduce new questions around authority, autonomy, accountability and supervision. Dheeren argues that responsible AI should be designed into systems from the outset, rather than treated as an afterthought. The discussion also examines Trust in AI and the human behaviours that underpin responsible use. Transparency, critical judgement and accountability remain important as AI systems become increasingly capable of making recommendations, taking actions and supporting significant decisions. For CIOs and technology leaders, another key theme is AI culture and capability. One-off training sessions are unlikely to be enough. Sustainable AI capability comes through practice, experimentation, peer learning and leaders modelling the behaviours they want to see across their organisations. The conversation also considers organisational knowledge, talent strategy and the potential impact of increasing reliance on AI — particularly when experienced employees hold valuable tacit knowledge that may not be easily captured or transferred. Finally, Dheeren discusses why CIO leadership needs to move beyond implementing AI into rethinking how work and business processes are designed.
