Ep 14: Intro to Reading EKGs
In this extended episode we cover the basics of reading EKG rhythm strips. Forget memorizing a hundred different pictures — we build the one systematic method that works on every EKG you'll ever see. Rate, regularity, P waves, PR interval, QRS width: five questions, asked in order, and the rhythm names itself. We start with the conduction system and the two forces behind almost every dysrhythmia — irritability, which fires early, and escape, which comes to the rescue and must never be suppressed. Then we read the paper itself: the boxes, the time, and the three ways to measure a heart rate. From there we work through the basic rhythms you must know — sinus, the atrials including A-fib and flutter, junctional, SVT, all four AV blocks, plus the ventriculars from PVCs to VT, VF, asystole, and PEA.
