Reid invented XLEG, the first version of a hands-free knee crutch! In 2015, an icy Calgary road sent him into a tree and a two-and-a-half year gauntlet of 13 surgeries to save his right leg. He sketched the first version of a hands-free knee crutch between surgery ten and eleven. He drew a sketch in a hospital bed which is now XLEG, a commercially manufactured mobility device with FDA and Health Canada registration, four granted patents, and production runs in Calgary. He survived prescribed medication dependence and walked away from eight years on oxycodone through a taper program now used across western Canada He built the prototype with YouTube-taught welding skills because existing crutch alternatives failed him when he needed them most. He navigated the full arc from patient desperation to a regulated medical device company, including $115,000 in Alberta Innovates grants and a 2026 Startup TNT Summit win. Find out more: www.xleg.ca
