audible fotosynthesis series no 19 feat Toupee
It brings me great joy to share this mix by my old friend Toupee. We’ve known each other since the very early 2000s, when I was getting into the music scene as a nerdy kid from Boronia. Our paths crossed at some amazing dub techno and deep techno parties in warehouses around Richmond. We quickly discovered that we shared a love for proper deep music and became friends pretty quickly. Nicole also opened an amazing record store called Slap Records on Gertrude Street. The rest is history. She was one of the main reasons I was inspired to put on the Deep Chord parties with some friends, pushing the wonky minimal sounds that were emerging in the late ’90s and early 2000s, a seminal period for the genre. Slap Records quickly became a hub for like-minded souls and DJs looking for some of the best music of that era. I was lucky enough to see Toupee play some amazing sets around town, at places like the Meccanoid parties and some of the big raves of the day. I was also lucky enough to do a B2B with her at one of my Deep Chord nights in the mighty Mercat Cross basement. I’m so grateful that we’ve managed to stay in contact all these years. Toupee’s recorded mixes were quite sparse back in the day, and I really only remember her Sunny mix CD as an example of her style and incredible DJ ability. This mix is no different. The scope of music covered here is a testament to her uncompromising approach, deep knowledge and enduring love for exceptional deep techno. 1. SND&RTN - The Mole 2. Jarvier Ho - The Arrival 3.
