Julia Twomey-Davie: Enneagram Types & Jungian Archetypes, 1994
Julia Twomey-Davie presents her dissertation linking the Wagner Enneagram Inventory to Carol Pearson's 12 Heroic Archetypes—the first empirical study to test both systems together. Testing 185 subjects with five psychological instruments, she found that anxiety predictably triggers disintegration pathways: anxious Ones, for example, shifted toward Four traits and away from Seven. Recorded live at Stanford's First International Enneagram Conference in August 1994. Julia Twomey-Davie describes her dissertation research connecting Enneagram types to Jungian archetypes. After learning the Enneagram from Dr. Jerry Wagner at Loyola University, she worked with patients at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and saw how the system clarified psychological patterns. Wagner suggested she test whether Pearson's 12 archetypes correlated with Enneagram types, and whether ego strength and anxiety shifted those correlations. She administered five instruments to 185 adults: Wagner's Enneagram Inventory, Pearson's Heroic Myth Index, the Barron Scale (MMPI), Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and the Crown Marlowe Social Desirability Scale. Her hypothesis—that the 12 archetypes function like a periodic table of psychological elements—held up: specific types consistently matched specific archetypes. Most striking: high anxiety reliably produced disintegration movement. Ones under stress showed Four traits and lower Seven scores. She walks through her data tables, predictions versus results, and acknowledges her sample's limitations: 83% women, 62% with graduate degrees, 95% Caucasian. Six Archetypes We Live By — Carol Pearson — A companion volume by Pearson that Twomey-Davie recommends alongside *Awakening the Heroes Within*. The Heroic Myth Index — Carol Pearson — The measurement instrument Pearson designed to assess archetype patterns; used as one of five inventories in Twomey-Davie's study to test 185 subjects. Wagner Enneagram Inventory — Dr. Jerry Wagner — The Enneagram assessment tool designed by Dr. Wagner; one of the five core instruments used in the research to generate total, positive, and negative Enneagram scores. Minnesota Multiphase Personality Inventory (Barron Scale) — University of Minnesota — One of the most widely used psychological instruments; Twomey-Davie used it to measure ego strength in correlation with Enneagram patterns. Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) — A mainline psychological measure used to assess anxiety levels and their effect on Enneagram disintegration pathways in the study.
