Once Upon A Curse: The Magic Nobody Wanted
Once Upon a Curse: The Magic Nobody Wanted What’s worse: being punished for something you did—or being cursed for something that had absolutely nothing to do with you? Before curses belonged to fairy tales, people carved them into stone, pressed them into clay, raised them on wooden poles, and used them to protect tombs, defend boundaries, punish enemies, and call upon the supernatural for justice. In this episode of Goddess Behavior , we’re tracing curses from the ancient world into folklore to discover how supernatural warnings eventually became some of our most enduring stories. And somewhere along the way, the question changed. Ancient curses asked: What happens when someone breaks the rules? Fairy tales started asking: What happens when the wrong person pays the price? In This Episode Mesopotamian curses, Egyptian tomb curses, and Norse níð poles Ancient Chinese curse traditions and relationships between the living and their ancestors Sleeping Beauty, The Frog Prince, The Children of Lir And the question at the heart of it all: Can a curse ever truly be undone? The Goddess Behavior Take The earliest curses weren’t designed to be broken. They were warnings meant to last—protecting graves, boundaries, agreements, and social order through the threat of supernatural consequences. Fairy tales imagined something different. They imagined that curses could end. But none of them return to exactly who they were before. Because breaking a curse doesn’t erase what happened. Maybe that’s why these stories have survived for centuries. The magic may be fictional, but the experience underneath it isn’t. We all encounter moments that divide our lives into before and after . The curse may shape the next chapter. It doesn’t have to write the ending. Why This Still Matters We may not believe an angry fairy is going to curse us at a christening or that disturbing an ancient tomb will bring supernatural vengeance—but we still understand the idea that a single moment can change everything. Fairy tales don’t promise that breaking the curse restores everything that was lost. Instead, they offer something more complicated—and perhaps more hopeful. The past cannot always be undone. But the story can continue.
