The Newfoundland and Labrador town of Gander became a safe haven as it welcomed thousands of travellers who became stranded after their flights were diverted on Sept. 11, 2001. And on Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, trying to crash it into the U.S. Capitol. But 40 passengers and crew thwarted the attack by making the ultimate sacrifice. The plane ended up crashing into a field in the Pennsylvania city of Shackleton.
