BACK TO STEEMHOP LEADERBOARD GRIND AFTER A LONG WHILE
Coming back to Steem Hop after a very long while felt like picking up an old controller you thought you forgot how to use. The second I loaded http://steemhop.org and saw that big orange 3D logo on the blue screen, everything started rushing back. The desert map, the little white cube with the red hat, the endless road with purple and orange cars zooming past, the train tracks that always catch you off guard. My first hop was terrible, I got hit by a purple car immediately and the score dropped to -1 and I just laughed because that’s exactly how I remembered it. But after that one death my hands remembered the timing. It’s all about patience in this game. You can’t just hold forward and pray. You have to watch the gaps, wait for the cars to pass, and then go. The coins at the top right were already at 112 from before and my high score was 93, so I told myself let’s just see how close I can get without tilting. Once I got past the first road section it started to feel natural again. The game throws everything at you at once, cars on the bottom lanes, then water with logs, then train tracks with trains that come out of nowhere. The worst part is when all three are on screen and you have to hop from a car lane onto a log and then onto the tracks without getting flattened. I had a couple of moments where I was sweating because a train was coming and I was stuck on a platform with nowhere to go. But that’s what makes it fun. Every hop matters. I started collecting coins again too and that little ding sound is so satisfying. Got up to 5, then 10, then 12 and I could feel myself getting into the zone. The NPCs standing by the tracks don’t do anything but they make the world feel a bit more alive. And the music on makes the whole thing feel way more hectic than it should be. You die, you restart, and you immediately want to try again because you know you can do one more hop. The middle of the run is where I actually started cooking. I stopped dying to dumb stuff and started planning my hops two moves ahead. I got to 20, then 26, and I remember thinking okay this is already better than most of my runs back in the day. The key is not getting greedy with coins. There was one coin sitting between two lanes and I almost went for it but saw two cars coming and just waited. That decision probably saved the run. The score kept climbing, 27, 28, 31, and the coin total was up to 117, 118. You can really feel the speed pick up the further you go. Cars come faster, trains come more often, and the platforms over water get smaller. But when you’re in it, it stops feeling impossible and starts feeling like a rhythm game. Hop, wait, hop, dodge, collect. Repeat. I even started to remember little tricks like using the logs to buy time and not jumping too early when a train is approaching. I ended up crashing out at 38 and honestly I was proud of that. I was trying to make one last jump onto a platform near the tracks and misjudged it, got clipped by a car and that was it. Game over screen with the big STEEM HOP text popped up and I saw my new run at 38. Didn’t beat my top 93 but for a comeback run after so long, I’ll take it. Coin total finished at 119. It’s wild how much this game still hooks you. You go in thinking “just one quick game” and suddenly you’ve done 5 runs and your thumb hurts. Steem Hop hasn’t changed much and that’s a good thing. It’s still simple, still frustrating, and still that one game you can open for 2 minutes and end up playing for 20. If you haven’t played in a while, load it up. The first few deaths will be ugly, but once it clicks you’ll be right back to chasing high scores like nothing happened. THANKS FOR VISITING
