Episode #55

Episode #54
A child can be doing well at school and still be struggling. Ellen Brown talks with psychologist Lisa Boland about how to recognise that child and what to do first. Lisa believes a child's mental health should come before their schoolwork and their attendance record. Ellen and Lisa cover what bullying does to a child's nervous system, why a new school does not always fix it, what autistic and ADHD burnout looks like, and what social skills actually involve. Much of the conversation applies to any parent, whether their child is at school or learning at home. Lisa runs Lisa Boland Psychology, a rural practice working with children and adults. She is also a mum to two neurodivergent boys.

Episode #53
On July 27th, the NSW Department of Education released its new draft homeschooling Policy, Procedures, and FAQs. Nothing is in effect yet, and the current guidelines still apply until the policy is finalised. Ellen Brown and Brett Campbell discuss the draft and what it actually means for NSW families. What the draft policy gets right: parental choice stays central, with the right to choose their child's education program and how it's delivered preserved. What is still unclear: how much evidence of learning you need to keep, what triggers a shorter registration period, and how consistent one Authorised Person will be with the next. They also discuss the 12-week registration processing timeframe, why the 2025 audit recommended speeding it up, and what a parent can do if their child cannot wait the 12-weeks to leave school.

Episode #52
Ellen Brown sits down with Dr Rebecca English, one of Australia's most respected researchers in home education, who has been researching homeschooling families since 2011. Her view on homeschooling outcomes is more settled than the public conversation suggests. The research shows homeschooled young people are advantaged both socially and academically, and this episode works through why: parent engagement, the freedom to work towards mastery, and a child having some say in how they learn. They also cover the two misconceptions Rebecca hears most, about socialisation and about getting into university. Inside the episode: What the meta-analyses actually show about academic outcomes, and how large the advantage is. Why socialisation and university entry are the two misconceptions Rebecca hears most. What "agency" means, and why a child having some say in how they learn changes their motivation. Why parent engagement and working towards mastery explain the advantage. How to give a child agency gradually when they have come out of school with none.

Episode #51
Considering homeschooling, or just started and feeling overwhelmed? Ellen Brown talks with Tina Smith about the practical side of finding support and figuring out what works for your family. Tina homeschooled six of her own children and now helps other families as Treasurer of the Home Education Association. Inside the episode: β’ What to do when a school refuses to release your child β’ When a structured program is the right choice, and finding what works best for your child β’ Why bullying and school refusal are often the symptom rather than the cause β’ How children rebuild social confidence through following their interests β’ Work experience insurance from age 12, which many families do not know is available β’ What HEA's free helpline covers, including re-registration and disputes Learn more: take our free course, Complete Guide to Confident Homeschooling, at https://euka.edu.au/course
