Who Am I, Really? The Psychology Of The Self - Episode 477
Who are you? It sounds like a simple question, but the psychology of the self is anything but simple. Starting off Self Month, in Episode 477 of Friends Talking Nerdy , The Reverend Tracy and Tim The Nerd explore how we construct, maintain, question, and sometimes completely revise our sense of who we are. Our identities aren't necessarily fixed. They are shaped by our memories, beliefs, relationships, environments, experiences, and the stories we tell ourselves about our lives. Even the way we remember our past can influence how we understand ourselves in the present. And as circumstances change, so can the person we believe ourselves to be. We examine the idea of the self as a continual process of construction and revision, including the ways social media and social narratives can influence how we see ourselves and how we believe others see us. We also discuss code switching and the ways people adapt their behavior and presentation to different social environments—and ask whether changing how we act in different contexts means we're being inauthentic or simply recognizing that identity is flexible. The conversation also turns inward as we explore self-awareness, feedback, reflection, and the concept of shadow work. How much of our behavior is driven by conscious choice, and how much is shaped by old experiences and interpretations we've carried forward? When should we accept ourselves as we are, and when should we recognize that something about ourselves needs to change? Ultimately, personal growth may require holding two seemingly contradictory ideas at the same time: You can accept yourself without believing you have to stay exactly the same. Join The Reverend Tracy and Tim The Nerd for a conversation about identity, memory, social perception, personal growth, and the complicated stories we tell ourselves about who we are. Because maybe the most interesting thing about asking “Who am I?” isn't finding one permanent answer. Maybe it's understanding that the answer is always being written.
