WOULD YOU FOLLOW A LIGHT INTO THE DARK? | OUR FIRST HOLIDAY SUNDAY
For centuries, people have looked into darkness and wondered whether the light ahead was guiding them home or calling them somewhere else entirely. Japanese Hitodama appear as wandering soul-flames associated with the dead, while England’s eerie Will-o’-the-Wisp tempts travelers away from familiar paths. In China, the Kongming lantern becomes something very different: a light deliberately sent into darkness as a signal. And in Pouvi tradition, Moupeto , the sacred guiding torch, brings us another image of fire carried with purpose. Four lights burn across four traditions, but they do not all promise the same destination. And The Lantern marks our very first Holiday Sunday ! Along with today's four stories, Mark and I are kicking off a new Sunday tradition where we ask each other fun questions drawn from folklore, history, seasonal customs, holidays, trivia, and the wonderfully weird corners of the past. Some will test what we know, some will make us guess, and some are simply meant to send us down a strange little rabbit hole together. So grab a lantern and play along with us, because tonight we're asking: What guides me, and would I know which light to follow? ️ #FolkloreAndFlourish #HolidaySunday #TheLantern #OctoberFolklore #WorldFolklore #FolklorePodcast #SpookySeason #FolkloreTrivia
