  The Blue Jays are officially running out of runway. Toronto dropped its second straight game to Texas on Saturday night, falling 6-2 and sliding to 76-79 with only seven games remaining. The Jays are now three games behind the Chicago White Sox for the final AL Wild Card spot, and because Chicago owns the tiebreaker, Toronto needs to finish outright ahead of them. On game 156 preview of Flight Deck, Dan Riccio breaks down another costly loss in Arlington. José Soriano struggled through five-plus innings, allowing six runs — five earned — as Texas took advantage of walks, defensive mistakes and a wild pitch to build an early lead. Toronto has now lost four of its last five games at the worst possible time. The offence once again couldn’t generate enough pressure. Alejandro Kirk drove in Toronto’s first run, while Davis Schneider provided the only extra-base damage with a solo home run in the seventh. The Jays finished with only six hits and were held in check after Rangers starter Cal Quantrill left the game with an injury in just the second inning. Jordan Montgomery stepped in and delivered 3.2 hitless innings as Texas’ bullpen completely shut down any chance of a comeback. Looking ahead, Spencer Miles gets the start as Toronto tries to avoid being swept. Miles enters at 6-2 with a 2.65 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 87 strikeouts over 91.2 innings. He has been outstanding recently, working 7.1 scoreless innings across his last four appearances, and is expected to serve as the opener with Spencer Arrighetti available to provide bulk innings behind him. Texas counters with Jacob deGrom, who enters at 11-9 with a 3.79 ERA and 194 strikeouts. DeGrom is coming off five innings of two-run baseball with eight strikeouts against Boston and owns a 2.53 ERA across 15 starts at Globe Life Field this season. There is at least some positive pitching news on the horizon for Toronto. Trey Yesavage is scheduled to return Monday against Baltimore after undergoing meniscus surgery in August. He is expected to work roughly three innings and 40-50 pitches as the Jays try to piece together their injury-depleted rotation for the final week.   Scherzer Keeps Jays Alive: Toronto Blue Jays vs Texas Rangers Game 154 Preview | Flight Deck

  The Blue Jays kept their season alive Wednesday afternoon, avoiding a sweep with a much-needed 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Toronto enters the final nine games of the regular season at 76-77 and two games back of the final AL Wild Card spot, making this weekend’s series in Texas absolutely massive. On game 154 preview of Flight Deck, Dan Riccio breaks down a vintage performance from Max Scherzer. The 42-year-old gave Toronto five innings of one-run baseball, allowing just three hits and three walks as the Blue Jays finally snapped Detroit’s six-game winning streak and avoided a disastrous sweep at Rogers Centre. Toronto also took advantage of a sloppy afternoon from the Tigers, who committed three errors. Myles Straw and Brett Bateman each finished 2-for-4, while the Jays added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth to finally give the pitching staff some breathing room. Louis Varland earned his 34th save after Josh Smith made a huge leaping catch to help Toronto escape a tense ninth inning. Now the playoff race gets even more interesting. The Blue Jays and Rangers enter tonight with identical 76-77 records, and both clubs sit two games outside of the final Wild Card position. Texas had won four straight before blowing a 3-0 lead in Thursday’s 4-3 loss to Boston, meaning this weekend could effectively eliminate one of these teams from serious contention. Looking ahead, Dylan Cease gets the ball for Toronto in one of the biggest starts of the season. Cease enters at 11-5 with a 2.38 ERA and 236 strikeouts. He was excellent in his last outing, allowing just one run over five innings while striking out nine against Baltimore in Toronto’s 8-1 victory. Texas counters with Kumar Rocker, who enters at 5-11 with a 4.54 ERA and 132 strikeouts. Rocker has struggled over his recent stretch, posting a 6.16 ERA across his last seven appearances, but he’s also coming off a solid outing against Arizona in which he allowed only one run over four-plus innings. Dan will also look at what has essentially become a nine-game sprint to the finish. Toronto is chasing Chicago and Cleveland in the crowded Wild Card picture, while Texas still has both Wild Card and AL West hopes hanging in the balance. With the Jays and Rangers sitting on identical records, there is almost no room left for either team to give games away.   The Blue Jays’ playoff push is suddenly in serious trouble. Toronto was blown out 10-1 by the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night, dropping to 75-77 and falling two games behind Cleveland for the final AL Wild Card spot with only 10 games remaining in the regular season. The Jays have now lost three straight and six of their last nine. On game 153 preview of Flight Deck, Dan Riccio breaks down a disastrous night for Toronto’s pitching staff. Braydon Fisher and MLB debutant Brendan Cellucci combined for three scoreless innings to begin the game, but things quickly unraveled once Michael Lorenzen entered. Lorenzen surrendered five runs over two innings as Detroit completely took control of the game. Spencer Torkelson did most of the damage, crushing a three-run home run in the fourth inning while also doubling, walking and stealing a base. Hao-Yu Lee added a solo homer as Detroit piled up 10 runs and extended its winning streak to six games. The Tigers have already clinched the series and now have a chance to complete the sweep. The offence wasn’t much better. Toronto managed only six hits and didn’t score until the eighth inning, when singles from Bret Bateman, George Springer and Alejandro Kirk finally pushed a run across. Nathan Lukes did extend his hitting streak to 12 games, but the Blue Jays once again failed to generate enough offence when they desperately needed it. Dan will also look at a Wild Card race that is beginning to get away from Toronto. Cleveland rallied for a 7-6 win over the White Sox on Tuesday, pushing the Guardians to 77-75 and increasing their advantage over the Blue Jays to two games. Toronto is also now a half-game behind Texas, making every remaining game increasingly important. Looking ahead, Max Scherzer gets the ball as Toronto desperately tries to avoid the sweep. Scherzer enters at 2-8 with a 6.38 ERA and is coming off a rough outing against Baltimore in which he surrendered six runs and seven hits over five innings. The Blue Jays are just 5-10 in games Scherzer has started this season. Detroit counters with Keider Montero, who enters at 9-8 with a 3.55 ERA. Montero has struggled recently, allowing eight runs across eight innings in September and failing to pitch beyond the fourth inning in each of his last two starts. That gives a struggling Toronto offence an opportunity to finally break through early. With only 10 games remaining and the Blue Jays now two games outside of a playoff spot, the margin for error has almost completely disappeared.   The Blue Jays let a massive opportunity slip away Monday night, falling 6-5 to the Detroit Tigers in a game Toronto appeared to have under control multiple times. The loss drops the Jays to 75-76, but Cleveland also lost, keeping Toronto just one game back of the final AL Wild Card spot with only 11 games remaining. On game 152 preview of Flight Deck, Dan Riccio breaks down one of Toronto’s most painful losses of the season. José Soriano was nearly untouchable early, carrying a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh before Detroit finally broke through. Soriano ultimately allowed four runs over 6.1 innings, but his performance gave the Blue Jays every opportunity to take control of the game. Toronto jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before watching Detroit score four times in the seventh. But Kazuma Okamoto answered immediately, crushing a three-run home run to put the Blue Jays back in front 5-4. It was Okamoto’s 33rd homer of the season, continuing an incredible rookie campaign at exactly the time Toronto needs him most. Unfortunately, the bullpen couldn’t make the lead stand up. Detroit tied the game in the eighth before a disastrous sequence in the ninth ultimately decided it. After Zach McKinstry stole second, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. made the throw across the diamond on a ground ball, but Louis Varland couldn’t handle it at first, allowing McKinstry to score the eventual winning run. Dan will also look at just how costly these missed opportunities are becoming. Toronto remains only one game behind Cleveland, but the Blue Jays are now below .500 again and running out of time to make their move. Every mistake is magnified with fewer than two weeks remaining in the regular season. Looking ahead, Toronto turns to Braydon Fisher in another bullpen game. Fisher enters at 3-4 with a 3.22 ERA and 72 strikeouts and is expected to once again work as an opener. He has a 1.93 ERA across six appearances in September and hasn’t pitched more than two innings in an outing all summer. Detroit counters with Drew Anderson, who enters at 4-6 with a 3.80 ERA and 105 strikeouts. Anderson has pitched to a 2.97 ERA over his last 33.1 innings and has already handled Toronto once this season, throwing four scoreless innings of relief while allowing just one hit back in May. The Tigers have now won five straight games and will be looking to clinch the series tonight. For Toronto, the equation is becoming pretty simple: start turning these close games into wins or risk watching the Wild Card opportunity disappear. On game 151 preview of Flight Deck, Dan Riccio breaks down one of Toronto’s most complete wins of the season. Dylan Cease worked through five innings of one-run baseball while striking out nine, and the bullpen took care of the rest as the Blue Jays secured another crucial series victory. But the biggest story came from the offence. George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kazuma Okamoto went back-to-back-to-back in the fifth inning, completely changing the game.
