What If The Church Stopped Retreating
Evil is real, loud, and relentless and the Bible says it’s already at work. But 2 Thessalonians 2:7 drops a surprising truth: something restrains the flood of lawlessness. That one line reframes the way we think about suffering, spiritual darkness, and what our communities might look like if God’s restraint were removed. We talk through the question people keep asking: if God is good, why does He allow evil? Then we slow down and challenge the hidden assumption behind it, the idea that we’re naturally “good people.” If we’re honest, so much of our self-control is tied to consequences, fear, and comfort. The gospel doesn’t ignore that reality; it exposes it so we can live differently through the power of the Holy Spirit. From there, we get practical about the church’s calling. We’re meant to be salt, a preserving force that pushes back decay, not a crowd that retreats and waits while darkness spreads. With Ephesians 6 in view, we remember the fight isn’t against flesh and blood, and with Jeremiah’s words to exiles in mind, we commit to seeking the welfare of the city we actually live in.
