Is Freemasonry Really a Secret Society? A Freemason Explains
Freemasonry has been shrouded in secrecy, symbolism, and speculation for centuries. In this episode, Furkhan speaks with Maynard Edwards of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry about how he understands the fraternity from the inside. They explore Masonic history, Scottish Rite degrees, membership, secrecy versus privacy, faith, symbolism, the origin of “blackball,” and common misconceptions. The conversation ultimately turns toward something much more human: self-improvement, male friendship, loneliness and the importance of belonging. The conversation moves beyond myth-busting into questions of character and community. Edwards explains the square, compasses and letter G through the moral lessons he associates with them; describes the rough ashlar as a metaphor for lifelong self-improvement; and becomes emotional discussing how Freemasonry gave him friendships he says he might never otherwise have formed. The result is less a defence of an institution than an exploration of why men seek brotherhood, structure, meaning and belonging. Maynard Edwards, 33° , is Associate Director of Membership for the Scottish Rite Southern Jurisdiction and host of the popular Tyler’s Place Podcast and Scottish Rite YouTube channel . Before joining Masonry, Maynard spent more than 20 years as an on-air personality in Baltimore. Since becoming a Mason in 2011, he has held numerous leadership roles at the local, state, and national levels across the Masonic fraternity. Most recently, Maynard produced and directed two award-winning documentaries, The Eleven Gentlemen (2026) and William Morgan: 200 Years Missing (2026), both available on YouTube.
