57 – Yael Deckelbaum in ZEGG
Yael Deckelbaum is an Israeli-Canadian singer-songwriter and activist who combines her music with social engagement. She became internationally known, among other things, through her song “Prayer of the Mothers,” which became an anthem of the Women Wage Peace movement. Through her music, she advocates for peace, dialogue, and the overcoming of borders and conflicts. As part of the summer camp at ZEGG, we had the pleasure of welcoming Yael Deckelbaum to our community. She led a voice ceremony in which we created a space for connection and grief through voice, music, and presence. She also gifted us with a wonderful concert on campus. In this interview with Ina, Yael shares what it was like for her to be at ZEGG and reflects on the following questions: Why does she think it takes courage to live in a community like ZEGG? Why did she decide to leave Jerusalem, even though many of her family members are still living there? How did she experience the voice ceremony she gave at ZEGG? Why was it special? What can each of us do to support peace movements and stay informed? Why does she believe that facing our own shadows is one of the most important things we can do to heal ourselves—and the world?
