Bill reminisces about his childhood on the ranch, where his family inherited the land. With a population of just six people in Burton today, the town has a rich history that Bill is proud to share. He fondly recalls how his upbringing influenced his ability to connect with others, saying, After you're an only child and nobody to be around and play with, you learn how to talk to dogs, cats, and horses." Aviation became Bill's passion early on. He described how flying was as essential to him as any farm tool. His father, a seasoned pilot, taught him the ropes, and it wasn’t long before Bill joined the Air Force at seventeen. However, life took a turn when his father fell ill, leading Bill to reassess his future. After his father's passing when Bill was just twenty-one, he found himself at a crossroads. With family dynamics shifting and a desire for independence, he broke away from ranching to pursue flying full-time. Bill's journey led him through various roles, including a police officer and a life insurance salesman, before he fully embraced his calling as an aerial applicator "My life has been an open book of experiences — from flying to hustling cattle." Bill's career in aviation took off when he connected with Buster Hendrickson, who helped him secure a job in aerial spraying. Bill’s philosophy that connections are often more valuable than qualifications was evident as he emphasized, "I never put out two resumes in my whole flying career. It was all about who I knew." His journey reflects the spirit of exploration, as he traveled across the country, flying planes and enjoying the freedom that came with it.
