EP#44-When Records Lie And Rivalries Tell The Truth & DEL Preview Revision with Andrew John of the Desert Sun

  Oct 1, 202640 minS2

Send us Fan Mail The “preseason record” argument ends the second league play starts, and that’s exactly where we are on Desert Valley Blitz. We open with a sharp week five recap that gets past the final scores and into the real stuff that decides games in Coachella Valley high school football: ball security, penalties, the missing big-play pass, and whether an offense can function when the defense plays tight man coverage. Then we go straight to rivalry heat. Yucca Valley’s surge looks real, and the Indio vs Coachella Valley Bell game delivers another headline as Coachella keeps the Bell for the 15th straight year. With Desert Suns reporter Andrew John in the studio, we talk urgency, physicality, coaching adjustments, and how injuries can swing momentum, while still being honest about which team looked better on the night. After the break, we preview week six and the start of the Desert Empire League (DEL) schedule. We revisit the preseason order of finish, flag overachievers and underachievers, and dig into how transfers and newly eligible players can change a team overnight. We close with our most intriguing matchups, including La Quinta at Shadow Hills, Palm Springs at Xavier Prep, and the heavyweight feel of Palm Desert at Rancho Mirage, plus a few player names you should know heading into league play. Subscribe to Desert Valley Blitz, share this with a football friend, and leave a review with your DEL title pick. Which matchup flips the league race first?

EP#43-Week Four Desert High School Football Recap With Shad Powers of the Desert Sun

  Sep 23, 202650 minS2

Send us Fan Mail You can feel it when the desert football season flips from “non-league guesses” to “league play consequences.” We’re at that midpoint now, and we bring in Desert Sun journalist Shad Powers to help us make sense of what’s real and what’s noise across Coachella Valley high school football. We start with Shad’s story and why his coverage leans into opinion, picks, and the kind of details coaches love to post in the locker room. From there, we dig into the big structural shift: the Desert Athletic Conference. We talk about what the DAC realignment changes for the DEL, DVL, and Sun Valley League, why more desert vs desert games matter, and how promotion and relegation could tighten parity over the next few years. If you’ve felt the gap shrinking between the “middle” teams, we explain why that’s happening and what it means for playoff races. Then it’s time for the Week 4 wrap-up and Week 5 preview. We hit the Rancho Mirage vs Desert Hot Springs battle, Yucca Valley’s defense-first win, Desert Christian Academy’s continued dominance, Palm Desert’s momentum, and the teams trying to stabilize before league play. We finish with rivalry energy, including Yucca vs 29 Palms and the Indio vs Coachella Valley Bell Game, where tradition and pressure make the records almost irrelevant. EP#42-What If The Best High School Football Team In The Desert Is The Smallest School

  Sep 16, 202634 minS2

Send us Fan Mail A muffed punt at the five. A pooch kick that bounces back perfectly. A spike on fourth down. Week Three is a reminder that desert high school football is never just about who has the better offense or the tougher defense, it’s about the moments that flip a night in two plays. We break down the Week Three scoreboard across the Coachella Valley and nearby matchups, calling out where the film tells a different story than the final score and why these “pre-league” lessons matter. We hit the Thursday results first, from Rubidoux’s physical edge over 29 Palms to the surprise of Rancho Mirage taking its first loss, then we roll into Friday’s slate with Palm Springs getting pushed into another shootout and Palm Desert responding with a quality win over Yucaipa. Along the way, we talk matchups, travel, tackling, busted coverages, and how turnovers change the math fast. We also spend time on the game that left us stunned in person: DCA blasting Yucca Valley 48-7 with defense that scores, a sideline that’s dialed in, and coaching that looks elite. If you’ve been treating DCA like a small-school curiosity, we’re telling you straight up the hype is real. Then we turn the page to a full Week Four preview, including Xavier Prep heading up the hill to Yucca Valley, Cathedral City walking into a tough spot at DCA, and a bunch of desert teams looking for a get-right win before league play starts. We close with our Game of the Week: Desert Hot Springs vs Rancho Mirage, loaded with storylines, recent results, and the kind of 50-50 energy that makes Friday nights special. Subscribe, share the show with a desert football fan, and leave a review with your Week Four upset pick.

  EP#41-Week Two Scoreboard Shockers & You Can't Fake 3 & 0

  Sep 9, 202643 minS2

Send us Fan Mail Week two told us who can travel, who can take a punch, and who is starting to look like a real contender as the Coachella Valley high school football season ramps up fast. We open with a rapid-fire recap of the biggest results, from Notre Dame jumping on Cathedral City early to Desert Mirage throwing down a 43-0 road shutout that makes their 3-0 start impossible to ignore. We also dig into the most revealing “losses,” because not every defeat is the same. Shadow Hills shows real week-to-week growth even against a tough opponent, and Xavier Prep might have found its spark in a wild nine-minute stretch where the offense finally clicks and King Palum looks like the kind of playmaker defenses have to game plan for. If you care about momentum, identity, and the small details that decide league play, this part is for you. Then we roll into Friday’s storylines: Yucca Valley’s offense showing signs of life, Desert Christian Academy extending a huge regular-season win streak, La Quinta seeing what it looks like when the trenches swing the other way, and Victor Valley’s team speed stunning Palm Desert on film. We close with our week three preview, including can’t-miss matchups like Desert Hot Springs at Granite Hills and our game of the week, Yucca Valley vs Desert Christian, a matchup that could finally give the valley a clean measuring stick. Subscribe, share the show with a local football fan, and leave a review, then tell us which week three game you think flips a season.

EP#40-How A Youth Flag League Became Coachella Valley’s Friday Night Tradition-The FNL Story

  Sep 7, 202638 min

Send us Fan Mail Friday Night Lights looks like a festival from the street, but what’s happening under those lights is something more lasting: kids learning football, families building routines, and a whole community showing up for each other. We’re joined by John Mollinato, the commissioner of Friday Night Lights in the Coachella Valley, to tell the origin story of the league and how it grew from a local idea with the City of La Quinta into a major youth flag football pipeline. We dig into why flag football matters so much right now. John breaks down how young players build real fundamentals early, throwing, catching, route running, pulling flags, and learning situational football without the daily contact of tackle. We also talk about why the league works for families: a consistent schedule, a fun atmosphere, and coaching resources that help new coaches step in and actually teach the game while keeping it positive and organized. Then we get into what’s next, especially with girls flag football exploding nationwide. John shares how dedicated girls divisions are growing, how competition stays healthy, and how new opportunities in high school and potential college scholarships are changing the long-term value of getting started early. We also highlight the behind-the-scenes work that keeps things safe and smooth, from refs and security to parking flow, plus the sponsors and community partners that help reward kids and support families. Subscribe for more local sports stories, share this with a coach or parent, and leave a review if Desert Valley Blitz helps you see the game and the community a little differently.
