The Seven Principles of Sen no Rikyu, #2: Thoughtfulness for Everyday Life
Today, we will look at the remaining three of Sen no Rikyu’s Seven Principles. In “Be early and allow yourself time,” we explore the idea that being early is not only about avoiding lateness, but about creating space in our minds. In “Prepare for rain even when it is not raining,” we consider the importance of imagining what might happen and preparing in advance for the sake of others. And in “Be considerate of the other guests,” we look at how awareness of the people sharing the same space can help create a more comfortable and peaceful gathering. Together, these final three principles show us a way of living with more spaciousness, preparedness, and consideration for others—qualities that are just as meaningful in modern life as they are in the tea room.
