Episode #379
Où trouver les meilleurs débardeurs blancs ? (Les ep du 90) Shopping Debate on a Bus Ride
Aug 11, 20264 min
A slice of real, overheard French – three young women chatting on a Paris bus about clothes, brands, and where to find the perfect white tank top. This episode is pure eavesdropping gold: casual, fast, opinionated French exactly as it’s spoken between friends, packed with brand names, slang, and the kind of price-and-quality debate every shopper recognizes. There’s also an unexpected literary echo tucked into the story – a classic short story that suddenly comes to mind while listening in. This summer, no pen, no notebook – just listening and speaking. Subscribers receive a podcast letter with every episode: a question to think about before pressing play, cultural markers to go deeper into the episode, casual expressions worth noticing on a close relisten, and a comprehension question to answer once you’ve heard the whole story. A different way to make progress in French.
Conte de printemps (Les ep. du 90) Arguing About Cinema, French-Style
Aug 4, 20265 min
A Saturday night pizza tradition, a family film club, and a lively debate between a mother and her teenage daughters over an Éric Rohmer classic. This episode captures something wonderfully real: how a French family actually talks about a movie together – the reactions, the disagreements, the running commentary. Along the way, there’s a glimpse into an older, slower version of France – landline phones, a very different school grading culture, and a snapshot of everyday Parisian life that feels both familiar and gently out of time. This summer, no pen, no notebook – just listening and speaking. Subscribers receive a podcast letter with this episode: a question to think about before pressing play, cultural markers to go deeper into the episode, natural turns of phrase to notice on a close relisten, and a comprehension question to answer once you’ve heard the whole story. A different way to make progress in French.
David Foenkinos, Numéro deux (Les ep du 90) Interview With a French Bestselling Author
Jul 28, 20265 min
A real conversation with David Foenkinos, one of France’s most popular contemporary novelists, recorded at a Paris bookshop. We talk about his novel Numéro deux, tthe strange true story that inspired it, and a trip back to a very different Paris. Because Foenkinos is a writer, he expresses himself with unusual clarity – this is spontaneous, unscripted French, but easier to follow than most everyday conversation, making it a great entry point into real interviews. This summer, no pen, no notebook – just listening and speaking. Subscribers receive a podcast letter with this episode: a question to think about before pressing play, cultural markers to go deeper into the episode, a line from the interview worth repeating out loud for its rhythm alone, and a comprehension question to answer once you’ve listened all the way through. A different way to make progress in French.
La tarte aux cerises (les ep. du 90) Where’s the 90 Hiding?
Jul 21, 20264 min
A trip back to Brittany, 2013: cherry picking with my daughter, a homemade tart, and an old neighbor lending me her rolling pin. This episode is a slice of real family life in French – and a little puzzle: can you spot where the number ninety is hiding in the story? Along the way, I pick up something linguistically fascinating: the Mamie speaks with subject-verb inversion, a pattern shaped by a lifetime of speaking Breton. It’s the kind of authentic regional French you won’t find in a textbook. This summer, no pen, no notebook – just listening and speaking. Subscribers receive a podcast letter with this episode: a question to think about before pressing play, cultural markers to go deeper into the episode, three everyday expressions to say out loud, and a comprehension question to answer once you’ve heard the whole story. A different way to make progress in French.
