It today's episode, Rural Mental Health, Real Stakes with Julia Cruz, we sit with the lived reality of rural mental health, where stigma, distance, and scarce resources can hide depression, trauma, and suicide risk in plain sight. We talk with Julia Cruz, LPC, about what she sees in the Texas Panhandle and what it looks like to build real support when a whole region has only a few providers. • the invisible cost of low access to therapy in small towns • “diagnostic overshadowing of place” and why rural struggle gets dismissed • how local economics and industry shape stress, safety, and childhood development • Cactus and Sunray, Texas as a snapshot of culture, class, and community trauma • why funding models and staffing patterns leave rural counties behind • what overwhelming caseloads do to clinicians and to continuity of care • polyvagal theory explained in plain language for everyday nervous system relief • a simple grounding breath and heart check-in to try immediately • how to tell when “normal” might actually be chronic stress or trauma • practical ways therapists and community members can advocate locally Show Guest: Julia Cruz Julia Cruz is a Licensed Professional Counselor who has provided counseling and mental health services to rural communities in the Texas Panhandle for over 13 years.
