"Filled With the Spirit" Sunday Morning September 27th
What does it look like to face hatred, violence, and even death with grace, courage, and love? In Acts 7, we witness one of the most extraordinary moments in the history of the church — the death of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. His story is not simply a tale of tragedy. It is a portrait of what it looks like when a life fully surrendered to the Holy Spirit meets the darkest opposition the world can offer. The contrasts in this passage are striking and deeply instructive. While the religious leaders respond to truth with rage, gnashing teeth, and murderous fury, Stephen responds with a face like an angel, a vision of heaven, and a prayer of forgiveness for his killers. These are not just interesting historical details. They are a mirror held up to our own hearts, inviting us to ask how we respond when truth confronts us, when correction comes our way, or when opposition rises against our faith. The spiritual lesson woven through this account is both sobering and beautiful — we die the way we live. Stephen's final moments were an overflow of the life he had already been living. His courage, his love for enemies, his vision fixed on Christ — none of it appeared out of nowhere. It was the fruit of a life rooted in the Spirit. As we reflect on Stephen's death, we are drawn to ask ourselves what our own lives are producing, and whether the eyes of our hearts are truly fixed on Jesus.
