#72 Know Thy Enemy: Trent Mobley of Berner Pest Solutions
Send us Fan Mail This week Aram and Gabbi sit down with Trent Mobley — Associate Certified Entomologist, 14 years in the bug business, and founder of Berner Pest Solutions, a three-time Best of Lexington Gold winner in just three and a half years. First, the mystery everyone asks about: the company is named after Frank, the Bernese Mountain Dog Trent's wife had wanted for years and they finally brought home from a Bell Buckle, Tennessee farm shortly after moving to Kentucky . During his months as a "stay-at-home dog dad" drafting the business plan, one of Trent's photos of Frank became the logo — and Frank now holds the title of Chief Barketing Officer. Trent shares how an OB recruiter's pitch for a job in rural Minnesota turned into a move from Orlando to Kentucky instead, and how a decade at one Florida pest company (starting as a 22-year-old tech in 2012) left him ready to build his own thing. His secret shopping of local competitors revealed his opening: many still spray baseboards on the first visit, so Berner went targeted and pet- and kid-friendly — treating behind outlet face plates and inside walls where curious dogs and crawling toddlers can't reach. Along the way there's a great story about meeting Kentucky's house centipedes for the first time on his state exam , a quick crash course on the Norway rats giving Lexington trouble lately, and a firm "don't DIY bed bugs." Then the business side, which is surprisingly candid. Trent explains why pest control is "a process, not an event," why he wants Berner to be the Netflix of pest control (no long-term contracts, easy to pause or cancel), and why he publishes prices on his website when almost no one else in the industry does — confident enough with 155+ five-star Google reviews to lead with it. He also opens the books on lead costs: Google Local Services Ads run about $70–75 per call, worth it given how long customers stay — but after a July website overhaul he did himself (with some help from Claude), he turned off paid ads on September 1 and organic leads have kept flowing. He closes with a free tip for every Kentucky homeowner: deal with moisture early — check the crawl space once a year and keep gutters clear — or you'll be calling him this time next year.
